My sister has an OLD Mastiff rescue who has had problems with his toenails. He now has 2 of them that are gone, they are raw and sore. He keeps chewing at them, and the poor thing is favoring that foot. It's a rear foot, and he has arthritis pretty bad, so just watching him try to get around is painful to watch. The vet said to give him some Deramaxx to help, but that doesn't solve WHY they've come off. And I can't imagine how it feels to go out in the cold and snow with those exposed quicks. My sister is afraid to bandage them up somehow because she's afraid he'll trip over that.
He has a thyroid issue, and is in the beginning stages of liver failure. All of his levels are ok...he was just retested not that long ago, and his meds don't need to be adjusted.
Does anyone have any ideas on what it could be? Or what she can do to help this not be so painful? Is there anything she can put on them that won't burn?
TIA
