The long search is over...

Hi all! I just wanted to let everyone know that I have adopted Teddy! After meeting with someone from NCSC we've concluded that he appears to be all Newf-- of course you don't know what you get until they're all grown up
but at any rate he is the sweetest puppy ever and if he doesn't have the Newfie temperament I don't know what it is! He's just like a rock. Especially on leash.
He is so quiet and mellow-- everything he does seems to be dignified, such a contrast to my Eskie! He's only half her age (he's only 3 mos) and acts like he's already 2.

He is moving in like he's king of the roost though and has taken over most of her toys besides his own. Luckily Bunny likes to share and she thinks Teddy is the best new thing in the world, but Teddy is not as friendly. He growls at her and sticks his tail straight up in the air whenever she tries to play with him. I am concerned about this, also how do dogs work out their place in the pack? I am nervous about the growls as he easily weighs twice Bunny's weight.

He loves his crate and hangs out there most of the time, getting acclimated I'm sure, and of course he needs time to get settled in, but I want to make sure he and Bunny get along-- I can't chance her getting hurt. They definitely are only getting supervised playtimes together. Any ideas what it all means?

I just want to say that reading everyone's posts has been so helpful for me in getting prepared for my puppy. Thanks everyone for "spreading the love"!

He is just a big chunk. Next, puppy kindergarten and an ILP!

Caroline, I'm glad to hear that you've adopted Teddy. Now you've got to post pictures. He's probably thrilled to know that he's in a home where he is truly loved and wanted. I'm happy for you

Caroline, I am no dog expert but i have a feeling this is the new guy trying to let people know he has arrived. He may have not been "socialized" much specially since he is only 3 months old and just needs to get used to Bunny. Teddy may just be the alpha in the pack. A friend of mine tells me the dogs will work things out. Every now and then Brady tends to be a bit alpha with us, funny though he isn't that way with other dogs. I loved puppy kindergarten, it was great for the socialization as Brady presently is an only child. He has friend Sam a black lab, whose family allows him to run free. But every day Sam come into our yard and waits outside Brady's gate to be let in. They play for a while and then he leaves. Teddy is a very lucky guy to have you. Congratulations

Congrats on adopting Teddy!! Let the dogs work out their pecking order on their own, but supervise enough to make sure no one gets hurt. My feeling is that Teddy has become "street smart" at a very young age and is only trying to state her place in the group. I would socialize Teddy as much a possible. You are right on track with puppy classes and an ILP.

Just be sure that Teddy does NOT decide to be alpha over you. At the very first sign on any aggression toward you put a stop to it immediately. Don't know if this will ever happen, but just in case--kick it in the butt right away!!

Life is settling down here... Teddy has a "put-upon" air with Bunny, but they are starting to play. I think mostly they have worked it out, plus Bunny is learning her limits with him.

Thanks for your advice!
