The Battle of Beaumont-Hamel

Susan and I have been to Beaumont-Hamel. It is a very moving place, with the great stag monument, and the two trench lines just a few steps apart.

As I walked across the gently rolling field, over ground that was once the hell of No Man's Land, all I could think of was the sacrifice of so many young men, and the even greater tragedy to follow. The horrors of the Great War were not enough; the rulers of the world let it all happen again.

Tommy Atkins, Johnny Canuck, you Diggers and Doughboys, et vous, les poilus... and you, too, Fritz and Mehmetcik, may you rest in peace. Your leaders failed you, but your grandchildren will never forget you.
