Stinky poops

Hope that's not an offensive subject line
or at least not as offensive as Teddy's "messes"!

How long after one switches foods does the stool start to "normalize"? It's been about two weeks and they still are soft and smelly. I'm feeding Innova... I guess this is the whole bit about how it can cause dogs to be gassy and have diarrhea... also Teddy is having like 3 bowel movements a day. That's a lot, isn't it? Shouldn't it be more like one?

And... he also "smells like dog." Bunny doesn't. And they eat the same food.

Thanks for the help... need to clear the air out here...

I tried Innova for a while--about 3 months and my girls stool NEVER returned to normal--It was always soft and stinky. That is why I switched to Bil Jac. Within days their stool was normal again.

My girls poop--I have not actually counted but I bet it is 2-3. But they are small piles

One more thing. When I was fostering Izzy, she was fed Kibbles and Bits. I know that is a bad food, but I didn't want to change her diet, I felt it was the choice of her adoptived family. Anyway she pooped BIG piles about everytime she went out. I have heard that the better food you feed, but more nutrition is absorbed and you get smaller piles.

Also, I have heard that some foods are too rich for the dog. Their bodies cannot digest it. I figure that is what happened to my dogs when I tried Innova.

On the Wysong i feed they go twice sometime three times a day, that is with feeding them 1 cup and 1/4 can twice a day.
the poops are semi soft, not rock hard.
Jasons rott was fed pedigree, he pooped 6 or 7 times a day, and big big piles, i got sick of it, and told him he is going on wysong, unless jason was going to pick all the poopy up, he finally gave in to switching the rotten smelly gassy rotty over, and to this day, he goes 3 times small piles and is not gassy.

Sorry, but speaking of pooping. Does anybody's Newf have to line them up? Gracie will have pooped and the next time she has to go she makes sure it's alligned with her old one. I do shovel every other day, which she makes easy since they are in a perfect line. But she sometimes takes forever trying to achieve the perfect line. Is this a Newfy thing or just my neurotic Newf?

My guess it is your neurotic newf. Mine poop in the same area, but never in a line or any type of formation.

Lucky you!! It must make clean up a breeze!!

Rory too, poops in the same area, but not in a line. But now that you have noticed the "line up" and can pretty much anticipate where the next one is going to be, maybe you could leave the shovel there. That would really make clean up easy!

Hmm... all very interesting! Teddy doesn't poop in a "line," but he spends a LOT of time getting all hunkered down and in the "right position." He does go in the same place as much as possible and he will go, then kinda shuffle over a little, then go again. Might be like what yours is doing.

His poops are small too... just smelly and soft! I guess then that 2-3 times a day is normal. That's a relief.

Sarnewfie I can't find anyone who sells the Synorgen
and I don't really want to get food shipped... it's just so much easier to go somewhere and get it and be able to return it if it doesn't work out.

Has anyone tried either Wellness or Natural Balance (either the dog rolls or dry kibble)?

Thanks!

P.S. any ideas on the doggy smell? I don't know if it's his anal glands or what... but it stinks!

Well I guess Gracie is just neurotic then. But it is frustrating when it's mid winter and I'm waiting for her to shuffle around like Teddy. Newfyork, maybe I can place plastic bagies in a line and she will use them

Caroline, I find that the smell is usually due to what they eat. I know a couple weeks ago at our pet walk someone fed a lot of pupperoni to Gracie, and her stool was stinky for serveral days. When you switch food hopefully the stinky part goes away also.

caroanne, we feed Brady Wellness. He poops 4 or 5x/day depending on if he eats 2 or 3x. His poop smell can permeate the house from several yards away!!!! But it is easy to clean up. Of course every now and then if I notice it getting a little runny I give him and acidopholus pill for the diarrhea.

James gets fed twice a day, and poops about 3 times a day with small piles. It amazes me to see him balance with his rear end stuck out. He also pees in one area and poos in another area of the yard.
