Stem cell treatment for dogs

In my local paper today:
Dr Joe Yocum recently started the Centre for Regenerative Medicine in Salvisa, Ky. where he provides stem cell and other therapies for horses. Yocum said the stem cell infusions also are having encouraging success in arthritic dogs.
The current price for the horse therapy is $1800.00, but the price to treat a dog is less. This is in the Advocate-Messenger, Danville, Ky., Jan. 25, 2012 edition.

This is the kind of stuff I want to see more of! New, innovative treatments that will really make a difference. I'll have to google it and check it out some more. Thanks for posting!

I spoke with a vet here who's trained in the procedure. Kind of like IVF, there are 2 procedures to a treatment, one to harvest the cells then another to inject them into the target areas. Like IVF, you can freeze/store cells from the harvesting for later treatments.

Zuzu was not determined to be a good candidate because at this time, a good result is a year or so of improvement, so this vet preferred to use the treatment on older dogs where adding a year or two of better mobility would be most beneficial.

This is his opinion - I was interested in the idea but I'll take his rec that it's not right for my 2 year old dog.
