My M-I-L's golden retriever was sprayed by a skunk tonight.....

while DH and I were over visiting.
M-I-L said, I can't bathe her in my bathroom tub.....
DH and I bathed "Bullet" in the her tub.
So, 2 cans of tomato juice later, vinegar, and suave shampoo twice.... and we're all still skunky. The house smells, my car smells.

My hands wreak (sp) I didn't wear gloves. :(
I have washed with every soap I can think of.
How am I going to go to work tomorrow, I'm gonna have to wear a garlic necklace or something...

Any suggestions would be appreciated

Here is the secret recipe that WORKS. Mix the following:

1 quart 3 percent hydrogen peroxide
1/4 cup baking soda (sodium bicarbonate)
1 teaspoon liquid soap or dish detergent
Mix these together and bathe ("shampoo" in or rub down) the spray victim thoroughly.
Be sure to use this mixture immediately after it is created, as it is unstable.
Rinse with tap water afterward, and repeat if necessary.
For spray in the eyes, flush with water as soon as possible.

Gracie was skunked twice last year.
Nature's Miracle Skunk Odor Remover worked excellent.
Put charchol brickettes in paper bags and put them in your house, car ect. It absorbs the smell.

We used the peroxide mixture the first time our Sophie chased one of the black and white "kitties" from the yard and while it helped, she also ended up with red hair because it bleached out! I bought a product called Skunk Kleen and put it away in case there was a second incident, and the stuff is amazing! We put it on her outside (right after hearing the "play with me kitty" bark), and it worked so well we were able to bring her in to bathe her in our shower and have her sleep in our room that night. Can't say enough about how well the stuff worked. The smell literally just disappeared after we rubbed the Skunk Kleen on.

Thanks for all the recommendations!
I used some hydrogen peroxide and soap on my hands and they're better!

I'm looking for the Nature's Miracle Skunk stuff, or the Skunk Kleen at our local discount stores, and haven't found any...yet. The nearest PetCo is about 200 miles away, but I do go down that way a few times a year. Mail Order!
It will be good to have that stuff on hand, in case Bullet hasn't learned that those black & white "kitties" are bad news!

After we poured the 2 big cans of tomato juice on her, and rinsed, and shampood and rinsed, we used mixed vinegar & water and poured that on too, it helped rinse out the shampoo and helped I'm sure! :D

I went over to M-I-L's house yesterday, to apologize for wrecking her bathroom,
when we left, it looked like somebody was massacred in the tub, w/ all the tomato juice residue. I checked Bullet, and the only place I could smell the skunk, was near her nose. I took a wet towel and wiped it real well.

I 'larned MY lesson, I hope Bullet has 'larned hers!

Thanks again!

Just for an FYI - Us Ketchup not tomato juice. Ketchup has the vineger in it that you need, and you will only need to bath once. also, ketchup on your hands will get the smell out too...

When they inhale, it goes into their sinuses so the smell will be around their face for a while. Yours too. Until your sinuses are flushed and I have no idea how to do that.
