Show vs. Pet quality

What, in your opinions, makes a show versus a pet quality puppy?

I am asking because while I have no real interest in conformation showing, I am fascinated by working events. I know one of the things looked at is sturctural soundness. WOuldn't that be equally important for a working dog?

I am very curious to hear what breeders have to say on this issue.

Hi laura
a lot of breeders will say it is an educated guess when picking show prospects for people, the ugliest dog can turn into the swan of the litter.
Ralees Winddancer was the runt or smallest pup in his litter and he turned out gorgous.
it is an educated guess for us.
if you are looking for a structurally sound pup than you would put him or her on a table and stack it and the best time to judge them is at 8 weeks, there is probably difference of opinion on this, but that is what we do here, than look at the structure and hope they turn out as promising as they may look at that age.
realize that growth rates do affect the structure.
if you plan on working only, you need a sound dog.
you want a dog that can swim properly or cart properly you want a dog that is intelligent and has great eye contact for the obedience.
a lot of things to consider.
price wise, many breeders charge the same for all their pups becouse like i said, it is an educated guess.
dont know if this helps but i am sure others will add to this.
gotta run for a bit.
