Ever since we got back from house sitting, Ozzy has been moping around. He misses Jubilee the dane so much, and she him. When it was time for us to go, Jubilee jumped into the explorer with Ozzy and REFUSED to get out. Coaxing a stubborn 6 year old 146lb dane is not easy! Especailly away from her newfie boyfriend. I feel so badly for my boo, he misses the beach and his friends ( he made a new doggie friend daily over the week) Its hard to walk him in our town, not too many sidewalks and way too many speeders. So we are limited to dog parks which we can't get to daily.
He is really laying it on thick, and it is making me want to cry everytime I look at him.
Soooooooo.......we are talking about maybe a new addition to the family. DH really loves labs, but I think Oz needs a pup more his speed. Am I crazy? we have a teeny house that we don't plan on selling for at least another year, would another newf ( ideally an adult rescue) be insane? For those of you with 2 newfs, how much is space really an issue. DH thinks we do have enough space, and the yard is great, I really really want another newf, but am worried about space.

We have 2 newfs and a collie mix in a not-so big ranch house. When we got our first newf, we got rid of the coffee table. For the second, we ditched that armchair that hardly ever got used anyway, right? We can't get a third newf - the couch is too new to toss.

They can squish up pretty close to you. They'll adjust their play to the size of your yard. The poop pick-up is the worst part!
And you get a lot of exercise stepping over them. My husband says there are black dogs all over the floor.

house size in not too big an issue.....we have 1000 sq feet house (little) my old girl before her passing was a 85 lb lab mix and a 50 mix dog also plus a 20 lb cat 2 kids and a husband we like to be close (ha). we spend alot of time outside tho....we do have an acre lot so everyone gets lots of play time just outside. Now with the pup same thing....outside we spend all 4 seasons out there......looking forward to Skylars first snow......and at night everyone is in the house keep warmer that way with the wisconsin winters.....

Roisin ... i wouldn't worry about size (of the house that is) of course that's easy for me to say with one newf.

Everyone says we are nuts for thinking of getting another one, but I don't see how they'd take up too much room.... it's not like they move a lot inside the house ... it's just those leg excercises mentioned above when walking over them.

If you really are concerned about space then maybe you want to consider another low-key but smaller breed. I don't really know what taht would be ... a Clumber maybe?

I definitely think an adult is the way for you to go with ozzy though ... a pup might push him too far. Also you probably want one without too many issues to work out ... with Ozzy's difficulties (although they are getting better
) and Giles the crabby blind cat, you have your hands full from time to time!

I say if you can find the right friend for Ozzy go for it!

Ozzy -
Don't worry for a minute about the size of your house. Ours is a whopping 800 sq. ft. and while Kala is small for a Newf, our Murphy is big for a Pyr. We all fit inside here just fine. Think about it: it's not like the pups take up the WHOLE house at any given moment, only the space then happen to be in at any particular time.

I attended a family gathering with my neighbor a month or so ago. My neighbor's sister asked me if I kept our pups inside the house. I said, "Of course." She had a surprised look on her face and I asked her why. She said, "Well, your dogs are big!" I replied, "Well, we're big, too and we don't have a problem fitting inside our house..."

I should have told her that the previous owners raised four kids in this - believe it or not - two bedroom one bathroom house - imagine that! I guess it took a few years for the marketing companies to figure out that the more they say you need what they have to sell, then the more things people think they have to have...

And Ozzy, a year is hardly a long time to deal with a "small" home. Geez, Christmas is almost here again !

I don't have a problem in a 2 bedroom apartment. I do have a fully fenced yard for them and that works out well. I say go for it.

It's not like you're taking on another roommate, with all their furniture and junk. It's another sweet, quirky newf. Just clear the rest of your knick knacks off the flat surfaces, because when two newfs get a case of the stupid crazies in the house.........

Don't worry. It doesn't happen very often.

Go for it!

I don't think you'll have a problem...they really only take up the space they're in at the moment! Plus, you said you have a nice big yard...so that'll be their space for a good portion of the day!

Maybe that's our problem...our house is TOO big. Our dogs are indoor dogs and we have a LOT of them! Cats too. In a big house you really don't "use" all the rooms. In fact, we don't go in a good number of them except to clean them! So, you still cram yourselves and your pets into the main areas...kitchen, FR (ours is a combo Kit/FR area), and our bedroom. Oh...and the room the computer's in, which is the size of a closet!

We don't have a big house either. We climb over the dogs on the floors in any room. what we do have is tons of space outside for them to run all their energy off! So they are quite well behaved in the house! Hey we go camping in a popup with all three dogs! 180, 80, and 75 lbs of dogs!

Newfies are loke potato chips-you just can't have one, although Tully's favorite friends are his German Shepherd Montana and his therapy dog friend, a Golden Retriever at the nursing home

Go for it! We have a pretty big house but our dogs (and one of the cats) still lay right where we need to be at any given moment. One more newf makes everybody happy!!

HI,

We just moved to a smaller house and have 2 big
Newfs. I'm getting used to stepping over them, but then again, I did that in the bigger house.

I don't really think the size of the house matters. Our dogs are pretty much in the room where we are. They follow us around. Only time it's a problem is when I'm cooking in the kitchen and the two of them take up almost all the floor space!!!

I do make sure they get walked everyday to keep the rough housing to a minimum. When they get going, it's out to the backyard.

There is more hair and drool to clean-up. More brushing. (Thank goodness Titan LOVES to be groomed....Bauer, NOT). LOT'S MORE POOP. The amount of poop DID NOT double. I swear there are 4 or 5 Newfs pooping in my backyard. Wish I could find a profitable use for that stuff! I do find it harder to take both babies with me. Gotta have hubby with me if we want to take them anywhere together. That's the biggest bummer. Oh and double Vet bills. All said, I'd get another.

Size doesn't matter (
) My house is 4000 sq ft and the dogs are almost always laying in MY five feet of space lol. They run in circles and place - but only where we are. So really - they don't need much space. They'll just come back and hang where you are anyway.

Elly Mae, I love your repy about"you and yours being big and youall fit in the house".
When I had the 2800sqft house I had 1 135lb Malamute, 1 85lb Chow, 1 65lb Chow, 4 cats, 1 Cockatiel, 2 teenagers(just noticed the order here)and a 240lb significant other. It might as well have been 10sqft since where ever I was that's were everyone except the bird was, including the teenagers when they were home. Now we have a 3600 sqft house 1 85lb GrPyr, 1 95lb Newfie puppy, 4 cats, a slimmed down significant other and gaining by the day me. We all basically cram into the same 10sqft when we are all home! LOL.
I do wish I had done what my daughter did. She has trained her old 100lb rescue Boxer and her new 65lb Newf mix puppy to stay out of the kitchen. Great idea. I am going to kill myself, set myself on fire, scald myself, etc falling over the deadly duo!
Oh yes, we are downsizing house-wise and I have been looking for about 4 years. Looking for single story(old age)with all Satilio Tile floors-NO CARPET! Bonnie
