Friends of ours have a Lab and have suggested that we avoid, at all costs, road salt on sidewalks and crosswalks while walking with Wallace as it may hurt his paws, sounds reasonable enough to me and we are doing it, has anyone else from snowy, icy climes been advised this way?

Absoultely!!! And if you do take your dog somewhere where their paws are exposed to road salt, wipe them off asap.
There is a product available that is supposedly safe for pets.... it works like road salt. I've seen it in RC Steele's catalog, but have never tried it.
