Rimadyl vs Generic Novox

Anyone have experience of rimadyl vs the generic novox? It's time to refill Moose's meds, so just wondering if anyone has tried both and noticed a difference. I love that the Rimadyl are chewable, but novox and greenies pill pockets would be cheaper.

I don't dare switch him to a different med entirely - since even going a few hours with a missed pill makes him miserable. Thanks!

I know you don't want to switch - but Zu was a lot better when we went from Rimadyl (twice/day) to Metacam (once/day). Metacam has an inexpensive human equivalent as well.

I never used a generic Rimadyl, it wasn't chewable either so you must have a different version than I did...

I just don't think he can go without any pain meds in order to switch to another NSAID. I forgot his morning pill the other day and he could barely get off the ground when I came home and was extra stiff for a few days after. I felt terrible! I do like the Metacam is once a day and cheaper, but his comfort needs to come first. So I'm fine with the price, just wondered if anyone has had Novox.

Novox would be about $50 cheaper for the pills vs the Rimadyl chewables. He LOVES the chewables (and thinks I am trying to poison him when I give him pills of any sort unless they're wrapped in cheese so just wondering if Novox is even worth bothering with. It's funny - I have absolutely no qualms giving myself a generic anything - but with Moose everything is questioned! Thanks for the help.

You might ask your vet - I don't remember having to wait on switching her? I think we did a Rimadyl at night and then the next morning instead of Rimadyl we used Metacam and were off to the races.

I could totally be confusing this with some other medication at this point, however. So definitely check with your vet.

Mine take yucky pills (tramadol, abx) squished in a piece of bread, cheese, butter, or (today for Valentine's Day) in a cake pop w/o a stick. ;) Never tried pill pockets.

Definitely worth asking then. I just know we can't try prevocox since he'd have to wait 3 days, and other NSAIDs he'd have to wait 10 days.

Lucky Zu getting a cake pop for Valentines day!

Definitely worth asking about....I've never heard that. We also switched just one day to the next. Both our normal vet and the ortho vet said this was totally fine. (Maggie could not tolerate Rimadyl - it gave her awful tummy trouble. We stopped that, and changed to Metacam the next day.

It works wonderfully for her. The other thing is that with the liquid, i don't have to give her the full dose every single day. When she's not very active, she can tolerate a half dose, but on daycare days or if we're going out, she gets a full dose.

Good to know, we'll ask next time and once we've used up the rest of our Rimadyl.

I still can't believe you got kicked out of daycare for that!

My old boy Dexter went from Rimadyl to aspirin to Deramaxx...he did great on all three but the aspirin was a little worrisome with his tummy...The Deramaxx was a lot cheaper.

I know you'd consult with your vet for a different prescription, but wanted to pass this on.

Carprofen (Rimadyl)
http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&S=0&C=0&A=623
Interactions with Other Drugs

Drugs of the NSAID class should not be used concurrently as the potential for the aforementioned side effects increases. For similar reasons, NSAIDS should not be used in conjunction with corticosteroid hormones such as prednisone, dexamethasone, etc. The manufacturer recommends a 5 to 7 day rest period when changing over to carprofen or to another NSAID from carprofen. Aspirin poses an exception due to its strong platelet inactivating abilities so 10 to 14 days is recommended when switching to carprofen from aspirin. Allow at least one week between prednisone and carprofen.

Always good to be informed! The wait between meds is the sole reason we're not switching - even if another is cheaper, I don't think I could put him through 10-14 days of pain (heck, can't even put him through 3 right now). He does really well on Rimadyl - don't want to fix what's not broken. Just want to see if the generic is the same :) Thanks for the heads up about NSAID and carprofen!
