Hi! We are waiting for a rescue Newf, have all the paperwork done and submitted. All that's left is the home visit. I've been reading everything I can find on Newfs, from health issues to grooming to training. Do any of you have Newfs that were rescues and do you you have any advice that isn't in the books?? We have owned GSDs for tha past 20 years, so are used to big dogs.
Also,re:rescue to club only...The group we are going through gives you a 1yr. complimentary membership in the club when you get your dog. After that it's up to you. I think it's a good idea, since you can learn a lot by going to the functions and just chatting with other owners. (besides,Newf people are cool! Where else can you go with dog drool on you, that people don't bat an eyelash? other than the vets?) I rest my case.
Any and all advice about rescue dogs is welcome! Thanks

Jill,
We have 2 rescue newfs. They are as different as night and day. Our older girl, Sara, was much more tramitized than our younger girl, Sam. We have had her for 2 1/2 years and she is still changing and settling into our home. She is very leary about trusting or getting close to anyone. We are her 9th and final home (she was 7 when we got her). Both of our girls are very loving (Sara reserved by loving). Each rescue will differ depending upon the situation he/she came from. All you can offer them is lot and lots of love and more love. You have to be patient also. It took almost 1 1/2 year before Sara would look us in the face or kiss us. Sam the younger one is afraid of flashlights. She will tuck her tail and go running when we turn one on. They all have their own quirks, but they still want to love and to be loved, even though they were so abused.

Yes, get involved with you local Newf Club. You will learn so much and beleive me there is lots to learn. Also,if you have a local all breed club-join it and take advantage of what it has to offer--obedience training for one. Just remember to be kind during training. Don't jerk your lead a lot--use treats and you will get much better response from your newf.
Let us know when you get your newf. If you have any questions about them don't be afraid to ask.
Take care and happy Newfing!!!
