I've decided to break down and buy a set of clippers for Maggie. I want something that will work well, but I would like to spend under $100 if possible.

I will use them on Maggie for general trimming, and occasionally for the cats.

Thanks!

My electric clippers are Oster...I have had them for a vry long time 20 years +. I just get the bladed sharpened and it serviced (every few years)

Remember you get what you pay for. A clipper under $100 will not be much. You should get at least a 2 speed clipper. Make sure the clipper has detachable blades so you can get different blades. You will not be satisfied with a cheap pair to trim cats. A cat's coat is very soft and it takes a powerful clipper to trim them properly. Oster, Wahl and Andis make good clippers

Thanks. I don't mind spending more if I need to in order to get something that works long-term. Didn't think about different needs for cat vs. dog fur.

What size blade(s) do I need? And which do I use for cat vs. dog? (Cats are long hair, one very fine/soft - never matts, the other more the texture of cotton - gets matted if you look at her; mostly need to trim any matted areas and hind end.)

Here are a couple I've found on PetEdge. Thoughts on either of these?

Oh, you meant electric clippers....Then I would recommend one of the Andis AGC clippers. Mine is eight years old and still going strong.

Either of these would be fine. Generally a #10 blade is what you would need to get mats out of a cat. Depending on how tight the mat is to the skin. You have to get a blade that will fit between the mat and skin. For your newf you can use the #10 to trim the belly. Or if you want it a bit longer a #7 would work too.

I have an Andis 5 speed excel and really like it but it was over $100. I have a #10 and #7 blade and various size guards.

I may give in this year and buy some for the belly cut and chest trimming as my scissor cuts are less than perfect. Can you please explain how the blades work.

In human hair cuts a 1 is the shortest but looking at this a 10 is the shortest.

What kind of blade would I need for a long trim?

Thank you to all my grooming gurus! I ordered an Andis 2 speed with a #10 & #7 blade. Overall, I spent less than 2 grooming sessions, so I can justify that!
