Question-- Newf w/o papers?

Hi all,

Again thanks to everyone for being so helpful and friendly.

After much searching it looks like Teddy might be the one for me! The one thing I am concerned about is that he may or may not be purebred, won't really know until he grows up, so does that mean I can't get an ILP no. for him to compete in AKC obedience, etc. events? From what I can tell the AKC will only issue an ILP for dogs that look purebred.

Also assuming that he grows up and for all intents and purposes he looks like a Newf and walks like a Newf
can I get involved in a Newf club? Would I be able to get involved in things like drafting and water work with him, or can only registered purebreds do that? Much confusion on this topic.

If he grows up and doesn't look like a Newf anymore of course I wouldn't love him any less, just I would be disappointed that I wouldn't be able to get involved in Newf-events (if that's how it works). But if I CAN get involved EVEN if he does turn out to look a little "Labbie," well then it's set! He is such a sweet puppy and desperately needs a home, I just had my heart set on being able to get involved in the Newfy things.

Thanks,
Caroline

All dogs are welcome at SCNC's events. We even have a couple who doesn't have a Newf... they have a Great Pyranees. They tried joining the local Pyr club, but it turns out that Newf people are more friendly!!!
As for Newf mixes... the same goes. If Teddy looks enough like a newf, you should be able to get an ILP. If not, you can compete in Obedience through the UKC. The only thing you couldn't would be NCA Draft and Water Tests.

As you said, you will love him with all your heart, and he's lucky to have you!!! I still think he looks like a Newf!

Thanks so much for your reply, Annie! It's such a help. But I was hoping I could get some clarification...

What does "SCNC" stand for?

Just to make sure, do you mean he can't do NCA events AT ALL, or only if he DOESN'T look like a Newf? Meaning, if the AKC decides he looks Newfy enough to give me an ILP no., will NCA allow me to participate in their events?

Maria-- "ILP" stands for "Indefinite Listing Privilege." It's a type of registration the AKC will issue for purebred dogs without "papers" so that way those dogs can compete in AKC non-conformation events, i.e. obedience, agility, tracking, etc. I think those dogs have to be spayed before the AKC will give them an ILP. To get one you need to send in one full-front picture and one full-side picture plus the registration form and probably some money.

SCNC stands for South Central Newfoundland Club (who's territory includes, Indiana, parts of Western Ohio, Kentucky, parts of eastern Illinois... basically, a 200 mile radius of Columbus, Indiana).

If he gets an ILP #, he WILL BE eligible to enter NCA Water & Draft Tests!!! Many of the people who adopt rescues from Newf Rescue obtain and ILP # from the AKC so that they can enter Draft and Water tests, as well as obedience and agility trials. They only thing a dog with an ILP# cannot enter is a conformation match as you've already pointed out!

I'm going to be getting ILP numbers for both Kira & Sailor.

Thanks Annie for the feedback on that one. Whew.

Well, if the SCNC and the NCSC (LOL) ever get together, maybe I'll run into you...

Good luck with your babies!
