I picked up two very large (10" long by 1-1/2" diameter) chews at the local farmer's market this weekend. Our two have not had antler chews before. They love them, and the structure of the chews are holding up very well. The marrow portion was dry and rock hard on the ends. As they have been digging out this marrow, it seems it's not so hard anymore. They've carved out up to 3/4 " on each end, and now it's red and fresh, like blood, dripping out.
I need to rinse these off periodically because as they chew, their own hair gets stuck the to outside. I'm sure some water seeped in, but when I ran the hot water into the the chews for three minutes it still does not run out clear.
I've sent the vendor an email and am waiting for a response. Meanwhille I thought I would try to dry them a bit in the oven, but OMG, the smell!!!:uhoh2: I've since put them outside on a very low grill to dry.
Seems like they were not dried well to begin with. Has anyone experienced this? Mike thinks I should toss them. They were a bit pricey though, so it this is normal, I wouldn't trash them.
Thanks!
