Puppy Mill / Back Yard Breeders

I have decided not to go back there anymore. I can't with a good conscience go there and cotribute money to the buying of puppies etc. It is a shame as she is a very good groomer and maggie liked her. She grooms at a shop in a nother town so I figure that is how she got connected with this kind of thing. I am going to write her a little note and tell her why i'm not coming anymore. I am also going to call the humane society and give them a heads up and our local shelter, who prints animal care articles in our local paper every week. I hope to get them to write an aritcle on bad breeding practices and what to look for when getting a puppy etc. Maybe she will get the hint and think about what she is doing. She must be making a buck or two to travel like she does every weekend picking up puppies and taking them here and there. I am also going to call my vet and tell her about it. I think she has also had a run in with her during the bad birthing of some bulldogs pups. She took the mother dog in too late for the vet to save the puppies. That was another thing that bothered me. She didn't seem upset about it. I saw the mother dog that same nite with one survivng puppy who later died. Oh well enough said, I will keep you posted and thanks for the advise.

I just received my monthly AKC magazine. In the begining part of the magazine I was reading an article about how the AKC inspects over 4000 puppy mills/back yard breeders and kennels each year. I would think the AKC would not allow them to register with them. But they do, and they approve them too.. at least I did not read anywhere in the article that they shut any down.

On the Secretary Pages of the AKC Gazette it lists who was suspended for violation of AKC rules and regs. It's usually pretty easy to spot the puppy mills- John Doe, Your town, MO, multiple breeds.Faiure to ..../ Suspended for x years and fined x$.
AKC can't really do anything about sanitation or other issues- those they refer to the local humane societies.

I contacted our local shelter who were very interested. She asked a lot of questions and said she would pass on the imfo to the people there. Then she gave me a phone number of a lady who is big in wis. rescue org. I called and left a message. She just called back and wanted to know the breeds I saw there and said, they would do there thing. meaning, they will check it out. She said she would contact each breeds rescue org. and let them in on it. She said, she wouldn't be surprised to find my groomers name around already. She said they have ways to track brokers and will quietly see what is going on. She also writes for the paper and said they will run an education piece on buying a dog and the problems with back yard breeders, puppy mills etc. I feel much better.

Brenda,
Sounds like you did a great thing...and got a great response. If you hear any more I'd love to know.

P.S. I reread your post...what's up with her Amish comment? Too strange.

I know, I thought maybe she just told her boyfriend that so he wouldn't think to badly about what she does, but yesterday when I talked to the shelter people in our county, they said that a huge puppy mill in a town called kingston is ran by some amish people. Please note, I am not saying anything bad about them, just what I've now heard some of them do. Kingston is in greenlake county , my county but way on the other side from us. They said they have alot of problems stem from them.
Surprised me thats for sure,

From my understanding, there are quite a few Amish (especially in PA) who have turned to breeding dogs as a source of income. Unfortunately, those that I've heard about are treating these breeding animals (and puppies) as livestock.

Amish Puppy Millers?!?!?!? Geez, I would never have thought... but in light of all that's been posted, can see how this would happen. I guess the old saying "It takes all kinds" really does apply here.

Brenda, I am in awe of what you have done. Good for you!!!!! Sending you a high 5!!!

I guess the thing that alarms me the most about this is that I am assuming that the Amish would prefer to breed "working dogs" rather than, lets say, Shih-tzu's...... :(
