Probiotics

Here is a new topic for me.

I've been researching Probiotics to help prevent yeast in my Berner pup, Belle, as an after affect of antibiotics.

Questions.
Is it true that if there are no extenuating circumstances (course of antibiotics, bowel problem), there is no need for a Raw fed dog to be on preventative Probiotics?

I've also heard that they should be used preventatively...ie. prevent swimmers ear/itch in the summer.

I've heard they are NOT effective During the antibiotic course.... Counter thinking, that they ARE as long as they are given some hours after the antibiotic is administered.

What responce from the gang?

Probiotics promote GOOD gut flora. The antibiotics upset the balance in the gut.

My dogs are fed exclusively raw and are on probiotics daily.

And because has some yeast issues, and he is NOT on antibiotics, I have increased his probiotics to 1 full teaspoon daily, which is the equivalent of 14 Billion CFU.

Humans and canines alike should not take any probiotics at least 1 hour prior to antibiotics or 3 hours after.

However, a good kefir or organic yogurt can be taken throughout the day while taking antibiotics without altering the effectiveness of the antibiotics!

It really can be easily timed. So, no, do not take probiotic or prebiotics at the same time as antibiotics. one hour before or three hours after.

Yes, it does work to keep the yeast growth down. ANy good md or vet will say so!

I agree with what Sue and Robin said. I just put my husband on a Probiotic since he had to take antibiotics (well if its good enough for my Newf I guess the hubby can take it too!). I feed raw but I do not give a probiotic as part of her daily diet. I've given my girl a Probiotic only twice in 4 years....once as a puppy for a yeast infection and once when she was on an antibiotic. I use the Acidophilus. A good kefir yogurt is fed every now and then too.
