Potty Training Relapse?

Koda has been a pretty potty trained girl, until recently. She peed in the house twice today when I had been letting her out every four hours, and once yesterday! I am punishing her by putting her in time out and a firm "no," but then she gets destructive or jumps on our door and screams. I don't get what I am doing wrong!

She may have a UTI. Take her to the vet.

Punishing her after the fact doesn't work. She is not able to make the connection. And, it doesn't make much sense to punish her for a bodily function that she may not have control over.

I never punish for potty mistakes....Really never.
I always blame my self. I know that sounds funny, but i always try to back track and think what have i done to change things OR......Your dog could have a UTI. That means they have to go when they have to go. And four hours could be too long for a dog with an UTI or other problem.......Or she could be coming in Season, check if any swelling.
So a vet check could be in order. To check for UTI.
But whatever......when we get potty mistakes we completely ignore what happened, we just clean it up and I try to make a few extra trips out with the dog. every half hour or every hour. When they go outside i really praise again, just like puppies. Start from scratch....

The only time I use "no" is if I actually see them in the middle of it, as they are peeing, as an interrupter. But I just take them outside straight away and praise if they continue outside.
If you make a big deal out of mistakes things can get worse. They do not do it on purpose........Good luck and keep us posted

Good to know, Koda is a couple weeks shy of a year old and has not come into season yet so that is a possibility as is a UTI. It sounds like a good plan to start from square one again as if she was a baby puppy. I will go back to treating her every time and throwing a party every time she pottys outside. Hopefully I can get her back on track after a visit to the vet to see if it is a UTI. I know she knows this stuff, we have never had issues in the past.

RTaft, sure enough, I rolled Koda over and it was swollen under there. I wonder why coming into season causes them to have accidents?

IT's not accidents..it's PEEMAIL. They are sending out the signal that they are in heat. Some of them get confused and pee in the house, but their instinct is to leave a "trail" to let males know they are coming in season. A male dog can tell by the scent of the urine she leaves that she is in season. I've had a couple of girls over the years that actually began to **** their leg like a male when they were coming in and continued to do it till they were past the fertile part of their heat cycle. People think only males 'mark"...nope.
K...editing cuz the word that is blitzed out above is the normal word or lifting their leg....I didn't realize it was a censored word lol.

Peemail!? Hahah! I have not seen a drop of blood yet. She must be gearing up for it. Good thing she's an indoor doggie because I'm sure the male doggies around the neighborhood would get the peemail messages loud and clear. Although, When I read about heat, I feel like it said most females don't want to be mounted until the end of their cycle. If that is the case, it seems ill advised for Koda to run around leaving invitations everywhere. Silly girl.

They WILL flirt though! If you want to take her for walks..I would put her in the car and walk her in someone else's neighborhood so you don't leave a trail back to YOUR house if she is a marker. If I can keep the males here from smelling where the in heat bitches have urinated, the whole cycling thing is MUCH easier on everyone. They are kept separate from the time I know they are starting, and the boys that are in a different area of the house will sometimes not even realize they are cycling because they never got a chance to get a good sniff.

Oh, and with a first cycle..you may not see much blood at all anyway. I have some that even as mature dogs don't bleed much, and some that are really messy. I never count on the bleeding as a sign here..I watch the behaviour of the other dogs and when the females start sniffing one another and paying attention, i know it's coming. Some of them get really crabby too, some get downright scrappy, and some get sucky.

I'm getting very nervous. Koda must have PMS or something(lol jk!), but she's been whining a bit today. Also, sure enough, she has been licking herself pretty profusely. I figured that Newfies would have a mess of blood because they are so big. Hopefully I am lucky with that and we get a small amount. Thanks for the tips, Cindy, I have been anxiously awaiting this day. Having newfnet here to walk me through this time is invaluable.
