Poor Darwin! He didn't dig camping.

We went camping last night. It was awfully cold, so we ended up coming home early this morning. 38 degrees is not happy for this California girl who rarely sees temps below 55!

Darwin did not care for camping at all. We were in a family camp ground where dogs had to be leashed or tethered (but not to a tree). So we used a 15-20 rope with a clip attached to the picnic table. This allowed him to come sit next to the fire, or sit outside the tent if we were in there. He just could not get the hang of being tied to something. He kept getting his feet all tangled up/hog tied. If we were walking outside his range, we would tell him to sit/stay before reaching the end. But the kids didn't have this same forethought.

Well, my daughter had befriended the kids at the next site and was running over to play, Darwin was following her, and when he reached the end of the rope, with it between his legs, he did a full flip onto his back. It was awful to watch! We were unloading the car, so I had an arm full of supplies that I dropped when I saw it happen. He got up and shook it off--including all the dust and stuff. But I spent the next hour or two worrying about what could have happened to his back!

When bed time came, we were getting everyone ready, and planning to walk him around the grounds one more time before bringing him into the tent. As a side-note, I was amazed at how quickly he associated the site as our space and wouldn't pee on the two trees he could reach. Well, he was watching us go in and out of the tent, closing the door each time to keep the bugs out, and he seemed to think we were going to leave him out there, in the dark, IN THE DIRT!! He was not impressed.

When we were all done walking and peeing, we went into the tent to settle down. He was thrilled at the prospect of laying with us...but once the thrill wore off, he didn't know what to do. He paced and tossed and turned, and moved from person to person, to corner to corner. Any creak of tree or animal outside stressed him out and he would growl a bit.

Let's just say my newf is as much a princess as I am--and we will not camp again!

  I am sorry , I should not laugh, but this is just funny in my minds eye. I bet if you went somewhere where he did not have to be tied up all the time he would love going for an adventure. We do get our dogs used to being staked out, because at times it is convenient. Most dogs new to it, take some getting used to it.
DArwin sounds like a homebody :) I bet he has slept very well since coming home

Sorry you guys didn't enjoy it! We usually tether the dogs to our waists since they want to follow us around everywhere, and then we have hands free. They cannot get the hang of being staked out, either! Picture 2 dogs wrestling after being staked slightly too close together. We almost had to cut them free.

I'm with Darwin. I love to be outside, sit around a fire, hike through the woods, all of that. But at the end of the day, I want electricity, running water and a bed.

He is totally an apartment newf. Outside to pee, to the park to play a bit, but back inside to enjoy climate control!

Poor boy! Did you only go one night? I've taken Chloe camping twice now (for the two water tests this year) and both times she was restless in the tent the first night and didn't like not being able to be loose. The second night was much better both trips. Like, MUCH better! She actually slept through the night and, I think, liked being close to me and sleeping outside with me, but only once she figured out what was going on.

Oh boy...we're going camping with Ada in a couple weeks. I hope she likes it. It'll probably be cold, but I'm thinking she was prefer that to how warm it is in the house. I'm just terrified she's going to try to go swimming in Lake Superior!

We always used to take the dogs camping and they loved it. I bought three expens..instead of tethering...and joined them together around a couple of trees for stability, and it gave them a nice area to be in when I didn't want to be holding a leash.

Years ago, we would take our Doberman backpacking. He had his own pack and carried his food and supplies up the mountain. He was not on leash on the trail or at the camp site at the summit, so he loved the freedom. It either snowed or rained and hailed every day, but he was happy as a clam.

My Newfs...don't think they would find the same enjoyment in it. They definitely prefer the comforts of home.
