We packed the family in the car on Saturday on a whim and headed to Jim Thorpe, Pa. Chumley took a train ride with us along the Allegheny River.
We then toured Coal Mine #9 nearby and the tour guide told us Chumley could come with us. I actually had planned to sit under the trees and wait with Chumley with a good book, but figured he would like the cool temperature of the mine, so we hopped in the transport car and went down. He hated the car as it was rickety and loud like the older roller coaster cars. I KNEW when we were in the mine that he would not get back in that thing and I was right. The tour guide reverted to plan B and had a miner and my husband walk him out of the mine following the car I was in. He made the loudest cries echoing off the walls pulling my husband all the way to the surface trying to get to me...tad bit of separation anxiety. He was filthy with coal dust and this orange dirt so bathed him when we got home. He's a bit stained orange which I figured was the iron from the mine.
