Peeing While Sleeping

I am hoping for possible ideas as to why Bailey is peeing in her sleep even though she has urinated 30 to 45 minutes earlier. She was tested for UTI and came back positive. Her signs were a few accidents while sleeping, my son said she faked peeing and I noticed a bit of dribbling from her vagina. She was on antibiotics for 2 weeks and retested yesterday. The vet confirmed that the UTI was gone. Bailey had an accident on her blanket on Monday but, no problems the rest of the day. She is fine at night for 8 hours. Today, she went out at 6:30 am for 30 minutes. Bailey had a bowel movement and urinated (I looked and it was a good amount). She did drink water as normal upon returning home and bobbed for fruit in her water dish. This activity is something that she has done everyday before the UTI and I am wondering if I should discontinue it. About 30 minutes later, I saw a large wet patch on her blanket when she moved off. Bailey is almost 2 1/2 years old, spayed in October, has only had this one UTI and has never had accidents in the house since first brining her home - we were missing the signals. Any suggestions as to what might be troubling her. We live in Northern Labrador, Canada and only have one vet who is not long out of vet school. I saw in previous posts mention ectopic ureter.

So, disappointed at the moment. I phoned the vet about Bailey's situation and was told she would be given medication for incontinence to be taken for the rest of her life. No exam and exploration of possible causes. I replied that I would come in on Monday if the peeing continued. I keep hoping that her incident today was because she drank a lot of water and couldn't hold it while sleeping.

Our female was diagnosed with spay incontinence very similar to yours. We were using Incurin (Estriol) one small pill daily with no obvious side effects until the Vet couldn't get it due to a back order. That medication is a synthetic estrogen. The next medication available was Proin which is more of a stimulant and I didn't want to give that to her. I searched here and others had not had problems with Proin. Either here or on a Lab forum someone recommended "Leaks No More" which are non prescription herbal remedy drops which we tried and have used since. We get it from Amazon cheaper than the pet store. 20 drops in her food twice a day very simple and she leaks no more. :sunflower:

The first thing I would do is test her urine one more time in a few days to make sure the UTI is really gone. (If it's not, ask for a culture to be done so you can ensure she's on the correct antibiotic).

If there is definitely no more infection, spay incontinence is my next thought. Perhaps just a coincidence on timing?? I don't have any personal experience with it, but Shelly gave good info. A search here should find more as well.

Thanks for the suggestions. I have taken another urine sample in to be tested for UTI. I am waiting on the results and if negative for UTI, Bailey will be given a 2 week supply of a synthetic estrogen. She has an appointment booked for June 5th to see how things are progressing. We are leaving for Southeastern Ontario to take part in our regional club's Rally-O seminar. While there, we plan to take her to another vet who is familiar with spay incontinence for a second opinion and get an ultrasound done just to make sure that nothing was missed. If it is definitely spray incontinence, I will look into "No More Leaks" as it looks promising. I just wanted to say how helpful past threads were on the subject and I feel less anxious about our gal. I still can't help but, think that spaying her at 20 months was not a good idea. A later spay date may have produced the same results.

My Chase was 3 1/2 years old when I had her spayed. She delveloped spay incontinence when she was about 10 years old.

Have you tried cranberry capsules? My Tootsie was spayed at 3 yrs in rescue and when she was 10yrs or so she started peeing in her sleep too. I took her to the vet and they treated her for a uti once, after that they said she was ok and wanted me to start her on prion. I didn't like all the side effects so I put her on the crancaps to see if it would work and thankfully for us it did.

As suggested I would go ahead with your second opinion and culture first, then check with them about crancaps, if you think they might help.

Another thought. After you have had the urine test cultured and if she does have another infection, the vet should test for which antibiotic is suitable, then ask the vet for a 6 week supply. Often times a 2 week course of antibiotics is not enough.

Where do you get cranberry capsules? Are they made for humans or specially prepared for dogs? Capsules would be better than powder or liquid because Bailey doesn't always eat her food. I would be ordering on the internet so, I wondered where to look.

Yes we gave Tootsie human grade cranberry, in capsule form. We found ours at our local Walmart in the vitamin section, also at the pharmacy. They also have them listed with Doctors foster and smith.

Walmart had the cranberry capsules here but, had bottles with different weights. How much per day (e.g. 400 mg or 1000 mg)? Bailey is 120 pounds.

D-Mannose is also very good stuff. Myra had a very bad bladder infection (I thought the leaking was her getting older-I was wrong!) and we went on 3 different antibiotics until we finally worked it out. Every time after the antibiotic's ended once again she'd leave a spot. I agree with Brandie and Angela on checking again and also maybe a longer dose. At the end of the antibiotic's I gave D-Mannose for about a month after.

My bottle has 500mg I just gave her 1 a day. Ginger my little boston was having issues with discharge recently she was on antibiotic for 10 days and was fine until the meds ended then she started with a discharge again. Took another urine sample in and it was clean, so I just opened a capsule sprinkled a little on her food for several days that seemed to take care of it for now.

I hope you get answers from the second culture soon and can figure out what is going on with your little girl.

Update on Bailey. Her 2nd UTI retest came back negative so that wasn't the cause. I picked up the pills on the Friday but, decided to hold off giving them to her until Monday in case of complications from a bad reaction. Our vet doesn't work weekends so calling her on an emergency is very expensive. Her situation was not severe enough that I couldn't hold off. Over the weekend, Bailey had no accidents even though she sleeps from 9:30 pm to 6:15 am without a business break. I held off for the rest of the week to see if an accident would happen. None so far and it has been almost 2 weeks. I have put her on cranberry supplement to prevent future UTIs. Bailey is back to her old self so we returned the pills to the vet. I am still monitoring her closely just to make sure.

Great update, keeping our fingers crossed that she continues to do well and doesn't need the pee pee pills.

I was really hoping that the cranberry capsules would make a difference but, Bailey had four days in a row with one accident per day. The vet down south, who came highly recommended through contacts in our Newfoundland dog club, suggested Propalin (rather than Stilbestrol which had a high risk of tumours given Bailey's young age) if Bailey had any incidents on our two week trip. She was pretty good given that we drove 6,000 km in this time period with only two accidents. I thought one might have been due to not stopping on the 401 when she murmured. Bailey needed to go but, we could not stop on the heavily congested highway. I noticed that when the days are hotter, she tends to drink more water and that seems to trigger the occasional accident. However, it has become more frequent since my original post. Our vet back home in Labrador wanted to prescribe Stilbestrol (she felt it was better for Bailey) but, I asked for Propalin. I would like to know from those of you who are dealing with spay incontinence which of one would you put your female dog on. Please remember she is only 2 1/2 years old. Also, with the Propalin, Bailey is to get 1 ml three times per day. I wonder if I should start her on 1 ml once a day to see if the problem is solved with a lower dose and lower risk to her. Alternatively, place her on it as directed (1 ml three times per day) and reduce the dosage only once the symptoms have disappeared. So torn but, want to make sure that I consider everything before giving Bailey this type of medication.

I sorry the natural way didn't work for your Bailey. I always go low with dosage that being said I would run it by your vet to let them know that you want to go low dosage to start. They can update their records to show the actual dosage so everyone is on the same page.

Not being a Vet and relying on Google to see the Canadian Meds you mentioned it looks like your Vet is giving you the same choice that ours did - either a synthetic estrogen or a stimulant that works on their urethra sphincter muscle. Both have side effects but I prefer replacing estrogen that is lost from the spay rather than a stimulant. We could no longer get the estrogen so we tried the herbal "leaks no more" by Homeo Pets. I am not sure how it works and can't find it on line but it works for our 5 year old female Ziva,

Are you sure about the incontinence? How many cultures have been done? Myra just had another recent UTI and we did a 20 day antibiotic.
