As many probably know, we had massive flooding here this spring. In addition to the obvious problems, we also had to deal with water moccasins everywhere.
They are always in the rivers/lakes around here but for about three months we had standing water in places there isn't usually water, and anywhere there was a pool of it, there was a chance of running across one of these things.
They are indeed one of the more aggressive snakes and they will come after you. There were at least a couple of bad bite incidents here.

BTW according to the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife there are between 5 and 25 snakes per acre of land anywhere in the US. And, this time of year they should be going into hibernation, so they shouldn't be a worry for many more months. We have one that lives in a rotted stump in our back yard and a neighbor behind us has a huge corn snake that lives under his deck.

I just read your last post, and you are in prime snake territory. That's why we have so many. I am along a large creek and surrounded by two golf course, one of which is a wildlife preserve, and a county park. We even had rattle snakes a few years ago living under an old bridge about a block from my house. My only concern is the pack of coyotes we just heard howling up a storm about 30 minutes ago.
