Obi is so strong!

Yesterday DH took the kids and the dog to the park. My son went on an apparatus that spins around. Obi decided he needed to be checked on. So he went. Leaving half of his inch wide leather leash behind in dh's hand. This is the fourth leather leash he has broken though the others were usually much thinner and usually broke because he managed to chew them. Obi is very strong! Fortunately he listens. Today we were about to cross the street to reach the trail head when a black squirrel caught obi's attention. He started to go after it pulling towards the street but listened and stopped when I gave the command. Thank goodness.

Nylon leashes are actually much stronger than leather. Or go to Lowes and get a length of braided "ski rope" and a snap and make your own. You might also try a nylon horse lead.

Yeah, leather is not that strong compared to some other things.

I highly recommend the static rope that is sold by the foot at stores like EMS & REI. You can also get very strong caribeaners designed for climbing. The break weight on the ropes is over 1000lbs.

That's what we have for a long line for training. It's also soft on your hands.

Owain in his youth broke and / or ate 3 leather leashes I had for over 10 years!!!
Now has thick nylon ones!

Yes, our backup leash is a wide woven nylon one. I guess it is the primary leash now! For a long line I use a woven cotton leash. Obi has chewed the nylon ones as well though I think that was mostly a puppy thing. Maybe.

I never use leather for the reasons above. Your goal is to get to the point where you don't need to worry about how strong the leash is. When Moonlight was young we trained her (obedience school) to be led with one finger under her ear. Wouldn't stop her if she wanted to go after something, but it was a good exercise, and I use it all the time inside and outside in the back yard.

Yup. I learned that lesson years ago. Go inch wide double thickness nylon and tie a knot about 18 inches from the snap end. It will give you some extra leverage and something to grab when you need it.

But I also got a very bad rope burn from the rope leashes.
