(NN) The Original Pesky Little Varmint..Gabby

Gabby, the Basset Hound I first coined the phrase "Pesky Little Varmint" after she stole a bag of treats from my pocket without me noticing back in the spring off 2008 went to the Bridge today about 1:45 PM. She had not really been eating well for several weeks, but was still happy and social. I guess she made a downward turn last night and was refusing everything. She did not seem like a happy girl anymore when I went over this afternoon, and the Vets (local and U of IL)could not put their finger on any one cause.

Gabby did have her 14th birthday party 2 days ago along with her local litter mate brother and 7 other dogs including Snuffles as guests, Snuffles first real outing since he blew his CCL and the infections. The pictures attached are from Wednesday's party.

Gabby, you brought a lot of happiness to many people, sick and old in the hospitals and nursing homes in the area as a Delta Society (Pet Partners) Therapy dog as well as visitors to the house. RIP sweet girl. The house will be seem empty without you.

Swift and gentle journey, old gal. You brought a smile to so many here and now it's time for you to work your magic elsewhere. Look up Hugo, the thief. You and he will have many stories to share.

I'm so sorry to hear that she's gone. (While 14 seems like a long life for a Newf, I would have thought that the PLVs would have a longer lifespan. Am I wrong?) She sure seems to have had a super life and made the world a better place. I'll miss your stories about her.

I am so sorry, I will miss the lovely stories.
I get the impression from my friend, that is a pretty long life at least for her lines that tend to be bigger boned and longer than back yard/mill breeding you see so many of.

And let it be clear, though Gabby was the first Basset I called "Pesky Little Varmints", there are still 4 others in the house, and the youngest will probably be bred in the next year or two and I bet my friend will keep a puppy. And I also have another friend we even went to today 30 some miles away with 5 Varmints, one being Gabby's grandson. 2 came from STL for a play date today also. Snuffles second outing since blowing his CCL too today. :)

I too have become attached to the "PLV"s through all your stories and pictures. So sad to hear of the passing of another of Snuffles' friends (?). I love the senior dogs with their lovely grey faces and wise eyes. Condolences to Gabby's family.

A retired neighbor of mine and amateur photographer who was at the party took the second picture at the birthday party Wednesday. That was I bet the last good *Happy* picture of Gabby. Last night just after 6:00 PM my neighbor called. He gave me two framed pictures derived from this picture with out my big feet in it, and a facial close up. He had them printed, and bought frames. I have not given them to my friend yet, so keep it a secret. :)

So sorry to hear the Gabby, the original PLV, has passed, but it sounds like her legacy will pass on for generations to come.

I'm so sorry, Leonard. I will miss the pesky little varmint vicariously too. I so enjoyed hearing about their antics and adventures. Rest well, Gaby.
