NN - How does an intact male behave if there is a female in heat nearby?

This relates to our son's boxer mix (boxer with a long nose LOL). He is an intact 4 year old heart-worm positive dog. We are in the middle of heartworm treatment and then he will get fixed after.

Yesterday and today he has been whining a lot. He's been on walks, isn't that interested in food, doesn't want to play and is only slightly interested in getting petted (usually he would sit for pets for a long time). All he seems to want is to be outside and he's started kicking up the dirt with his back feet after he goes.

He doesn't seem to be in pain just wound up.

This has me wondering if there might be a female dog or coyote in the neighborhood in heat.

For those of you with intact males does this sound like the kind of behavior you see?

If so, refresh my memory, how long does heat last? He's supposed to get the last heartworm treatment next week which entails keeping him quiet with no stress afterwards.

Sounds like an in heat female is nearby. On average they stay in heat about 3 weeks. Have you tried vicks in the nose? We use to use it on horses so it might help dogs I don't know.

Thanks for the ideas! Thankfully he is better today. Hopefully the lady in question was just visiting.
