Hi, I'm new here because I needed help (posted a message in the Newf Rescue forum). I wanted to tell you all about the nicest thing I ever saw a dog do! My newf 'Newfie' a 9 yr old female and I went up to get the new Newf yesterday and on the way back I stopped at a gas station and bought a hot dog. I gave half to Newfie and half to Jake, the new boy. Newfie took her half, ran in the back of the camper and dropped it in front of Jake, then ran back to her seat. What a sweety!

Newfie is trained in water and in avalanche rescue and has helped save two lives and recover a dead skiier. She's retired now.

Welcome Dan, Newfie and Jake.
That is so sweet of Newfie to be so kind to share with her new brother. Hats off to Newfie for all her hard work and saving lives. That is amazing. God Bless her. Can't wait to hear more about them.

Awww, that's really sweet of Newfie. I wonder if she's trying to make friends. You may be able to use her to help show Jake that it's ok to come out of his house.

I struck gold! Jack is AWESOME. He’s kinda nuts, but learns quickly and easily. He’s built like a leopard but tame as a turtle. He went from spending 26 hours in his pooped and peed dog house unwilling to leave to house training and learning to operate the electronic dog door. We spent the whole afternoon and evening together exploring forested areas surrounding my house and learning the outer boundaries. This outside expedition was key to trusting me and overcoming insecurity. From there on it was a piece of cake (or should I say ~10lbs of cooked and boned turkey meat). He learned ‘sit’, ‘halt’, ‘bang!’ (roll over) and most important of all, ‘come’ (whistle). Each ‘grunt’ is associated with a hand signal. I plan on him learning ‘shake’, ‘on by’ (mush) and a few other basics tomorrow. Man he really learns fast!

He’s also kind of hyperactive, which I attribute partly to his recent indulgence in meat. This is something new to me. In my whole 9 years with Newfie she was never the least be hyperactive. I’ve had lots of crazy hyperactive Labradors, but not a Newfie. Still he is completely controllable by voice and sign (and turkey!). Actually, he and Newfie are very dissimilar; Jack is like a broken-in mustang and Newfie is more like a little elephant.

After cutting out all the mats and cleaning him up, I realized what an incredible specimen he is; I don’t know my dog show judging, but he seems like the type that should come in first place. I think I can have him jumping hoops by Saturday, and catching squirrels on command by the end of the summer. Well, we’ll see, but he sure has a lot of potential. I think this is a great example of ‘Rescued Newfie’ gone totally right.

Thanks to all!

Wow, that's wonderful Dan!! I'm so happy for you and Jack. How is Newfie handling her new companion? I can't get over what a brilliant job you've done with Jack in so short a time. He must really be food motivated lol. Ok, so where are the piccy's???

*taps foot

Thanks! Newfie is a perfect lady about this. She knows she still runs the house. I’m going to give him a full bath tomorrow morning at PetCo…then I’ll get the digital camera out. It’s too bad Jack didn’t come out this morning, we had a bunch of snow here on Pikes Peak. Oh well, black and white is too much of a contrast anyway.

It does this every year this week of the year here at this altitude. It was the first serious precip we had in a month--the Colorado drought is still a problem, so do a rain dance for me!

rain dance:
lol

We're in a heavy drought too. I live in a Nat'l forest and we've been hit hard by bark beetle. I think about 80% of the conifers have been affected (some survived) On top of the drought, we're looking at a tense summer, wild fire wise. Good luck with your precipation too.

What's the elevation there? I'm at about 6k. Is there an elevation that mosquitos can't live?

Y, starting about 60 years ago to the present this area is infected with a mistletoe fungus that wiped out hundreds of acres of lodgepine around here and a beetle that killed spruce. The key is biodiversity: the areas that recovered the fastest, and where, until the drought started in earnest some 5 yrs ago, the lodgepine survived to centurion status, these were the areas that were mixed with scrub oak, other conifer types and aspen in close proximity. Forest planning is a long term thing that works everytime if you plant lots of different kinds of native species together instead of monoculture. Altitude ~8.3k. Rapid evolution coupled with climactic change probably means mosquitoes will someday be here, but not quite yet. I’m originally from Northern Wisconsin and so I’m immune to the bites. You too can achieve that status by being bitten a billion times or so.

Lol, he's still nuts and that will be the same in 5 years as it is now. Here are pictures, I couldn't get Jake to get his picture taken, but I tried...
