ahhhhh help lately luca has developed a wood fetish....he s chewed the crown molding in a matter of minutes. he also claws the wall i have scratch marks right through the wood. i dont know whats up with him . he has a million chew toys every make and model...all day he lays in our office chewing something.....but lately at home...when our back is turned he chewed up the crown molding and now he thinks he's a cat clawing the wall.......any suggestions....

Rudy , Tuggs used to do the same thing , i had a total of 6 holes in my walls in different locations the size of grapefruits! As strangely as it started ,it stopped just as strangely. We had to restrane tuggs to just the kitchen area for a while, they for sure need something to chew on, that helps plus we found out we had a few mice in the walls so that may have had something to do with it .Now the crown mold thats another story , tuggs does that too, and anything else thats within mouths reach wheather it be the corner of the grandfather clock or the end of the stair way,But he is doing better lately. I have to say i have put up with alot , not to mention pulling the wall paper of thew walls, it was tough and i didnt really do anything to get him to stop , he really just sorta stopped on his on.Good Luck!

How old is Luca? Jake is doing alot of the same things. I believe he is teething. Just have the spackling and paint ready LOL. Others here told me to give a rawhide to chew, freeze some old socks you have tied in knots. I have also been giving Jake some frozen plain bagels. I am sure the more experienced here will give you alot more ideas. Good luck!

I think bridget is right on about the mice. It could be anything that climbed or passed through. These dogs smell everything. And they take it as their job to investigate everything. Once it starts, I think sometimes it just becomes a habit and a learned enjoyment.

Anytime I see my newf sniff at anything I don't want her touching, I spray bitter apple on it. So far so good.

Just last night, I was at a friends house working on stuff for my "All-Breed" training club. She doesn't have Newfs, but she does have 2 Berenese Mountain Dogs. She had made nachos, and we were chatting about her dogs.... the youngest of which is 18 months, and still very much a puppy... a big puppy, but a puppy. She picked up a Jalepeno Pepper and told me that it was the best deterrent the found to stop him from chewing. They just rubbed it over the area he was chewing, and after discovering the "new" taste, he never went back to that area again.

We have used the bitter apple for Brady as well. We even spray it on our socks to keep his mouth off. As far as a wood fettish, Brady does bring us in fire wood a piece at a time. Right now I have 2 pieces sitting on our entertainment center. He was so proud of them.

Jalepeno pepper is a good idea. Having raised goldens for years, we had to use cayene pepper when they dug holes. The usual method to stop a dog from digging is to fill the hole with rocks and stones. That does not work with goldens. They love them.

I'm going to hate myself for saying this, I'm sure. It's sure to put a jinx on me.
none of my newfs have been interested in walls, wood, or anything else like that. There hasn't been any destruction yet. There, I said, and I'm going to be Sorry! But if they did (or do now that I've bragged) I'll try rubbing the jalepeno pepper on interesting spots. I know the cayene works, so I'd go with the jalepeno.

Kodi has knawed all the lattice work off our deck and most of the lattice skirting around the bottom. He started at a very early age. Too much wood for the bitter apple thing
He's never touched any wood inside the house, thank goodness. He'll pull pieces of wood out of the garage, then lay down and chew on them. He seems to enjoy this more than any of his store bought chew bones and rawhides.
