Newf Books or Animal Books in General

Apart from the second book about Karen Killilea by her mother Marie, The only book I have with Newfie anecdotes is Margaret Chern's classic book on the Newfoundland. I see there are a couple of newer books:

- In the Company of Newfies: A Shared Life by Rhoda Lerman
- Ninety-Nine Newfies by Pat Seawell

I ordered a copy of the Ninety-Nine Newfies book from ABE but the other one was VERY expensive because it's out-of-print so I passed on it.

I notice that the ASPCA has a new book called "Shelter Dogs" by Traer Scott which has portraits of 50 dogs and what happened to them. That sounds very interesting as a Christmas book for myself <g>

I have a book similar to this called "Dogs and Their Women" by Barbara Cohen and Louise Taylor that I find very touching and poignant. Unfortunately it is out-of-print now.

Some of my favourite books on animals are those that cite personal experience. I favour books that describe and encourage a respectful bonding of people and animals: the interrelational part of pet ownership and communication, tuning-in and taking time for the animals in your life.

Books that have influenced my own approach and philosophy to pets:

- How To Be Your Dog's Best Friend by the Monks of New Skete
- Kinship With All Life by J. Allen Boone
- A Celebration of Dogs by Roger Caras
- What the Animals Tell Me by Beatrice Lydecker
- Gerald Durrell's books--all of them

Does anyone else have other books to recommend like these I enjoy--personal memoirs or anecdotes about communicating with animals and integrating them into your life?

They don't have to specifically be about Newfs, although if you'd like to comment on Newf books you've enjoyed I'd love to hear about them, or opinions of the two books on Newfs that I cite above.

Thanks.

As far as I know, In the Company of Newfies isn't out of print. There is a whole thread on it here:

There is a link in the thread of where you can order it. That's where I got my copy. It's a wonderful book! If you read the thread you'll find out there are many fans here!

p.s. if you "show all topics" in the Reading Room you will find lots of great info on books! ;)

Okay, I just assumed because amazon.ca and Chapters didn't have it that it was OOP. Also, copies on ABE are very high even without shipping.

On the author's site it's $28 US plus shipping. I don't have the extra money right now since I've committed to adopting a dog hopefully.
