Hi everyone-we are getting a new newfie. He is a baby boy that will be named Mikey. He is 8 weeks old and a hansome little guy. I am having questions about the information I recived from the breeder. He states that the pup is already potty trained and does not have indoor accidents. Everything else looks great. All the references check out, including the vet. The kennel is clean and well taken care of, the parents and other dogs look wonderful. I guess my question is care a pup that young be completely trained? Our other newfie was a year old when we saved her. Thanks for anything anyone can do to clear up our comfusion. Sheehan

Stoli was completely housebroken by 10 weeks so it is possible. They're pretty smart dogs. He did, however, deliberatly pee in every single room the first time he was allowed into it. But never any accidents. Can't wait to see Mikey.

Well...I have heard of pups that ARE totally trained at that age, but they have doggie doors and the mother has shown them how to go out and potty.

If you keep an eagle eye on him, he'll no doubt let you know when it's time to go out...as soon as he figures out where the door to outside is at your house!

Don't be upset if he's isn't totally trained once he gets to your house. There will probably be a little period of adjustment. Plus, a puppy's bladder is very small and can't "wait" long between bathroom trips. As he grows up, his bladder will mature too. Poops usually are easy to predict. Take them out right after eating...right after!

However, if he is trained to go outside...it'll be much easier to train him to continue that pattern at your home.

Where did you find out about your breeder? Please don't mention names, but are they someone who was referred to you?

Best of luck with Mikey. Please post pictures when you get them.

Thanks for your responces. I will posts pictures as soon as I figure out how (I'm kind of computer-slow, I'll have my ten-year-old show me how.) Yes we where refered by a family friend. I learned ot have patients about potty training, I thought my 6 year-old would never get it down, the idea of getting to ride the big girl bus with her sisters did it for her. Do newfie's like the big girl bus? Sorry it's been a long day. But really thanks for your advice.

I don't know about the big-girl bus...mine have never even SEEN a bus!

Some are easier to train than others...just like kids. Molly took about 7 mos to totally train. I was about to lose my mind, when all of a sudden, she just "got it"!!

Mira was trained at about 4 mos (16 weeks) and she's never had an accident since.

If you can train a child...you can train a puppy. Same concept, without the diapers!

Charlie, now 11 months, understood that he was outside to pee; he didn't understand that he couldn't pee in the house. I would say that he as 8 or 9 months before he understood both parts.

The other problem we had with Charlie was that he wouldn't let us know that he needed to go out. We would have to be lucky enough to catch him sitting by the door (which is also his favorite place to sleep). We put a bell up by the door, as suggested by several people on Newf Net; we would hit it every time we went out with him; we would even bat it with his paw, but he never seemed to want to do it on his own. About 2 months ago, we realized that, now, when he sits by the door, he purposely brush against the bell to ring it. Note that he doesn't nose it or hit it with a paw, he rubs against it. If we ignore him, he'll do it again. Talk about lazy!

Our Bella had a pretty good grasp on pottying outside when we got her at 9 weeks old. She did occasionally have an accident-but rarely. What really got her totally pottytrained was the doggy door. We got one that goes in your slider. Once she realised that she had total control of when she went outside-no more accidents....ever! Good luck with the new puppy!

I think alot depends on the pup and how the breeder raised them. Our breeder has a doggie door leading out from the area she keeps the pups. They start learning to go out at a very early age. Joey was 10 weeks when we got him and never had an accident on the floor. He went right to the door from the beginning and would sit there and look at me. He did have a couple in the crate..but was trying to tell me he had to go by crying. Of course, I just thought he wanted out.
