My Seniors

Long ago time I was blessed to have so many young dogs at one time. Wonderful time for sure. And it still is! But I'm a tad nervous. Daria turned 9 last month, Stormie just turned 8, Maia is 7 1/2 years old and Faith turns 7 on July th. Aside from Faith's current issues (she was diagnosed with tendonitis last week.......doesn't seem to be getting better so any info would be greatly appreciated) the rest are doing well.

Stormie seems to be aging in reverse. The older she gets, the younger/better she looks. Go Stormie!!

Despite the number of dogs I've had over the years, I've only had two that lived to an "older" age. Beau Bear (Saint) was 9 when he passed and Hope (Shiba Inu) was 9 1/2. This senior stuff is new to me but it's an exciting and understandably nervewracking time as well. Daria will outlive everyone.......just because....:neener::devil2::joker::angel::LMAO:

I know the feeling. My Adam was 10 Feb 15th and Chase was 8 on Feb 3. Both are in really good health.

Sara lived to be 6 weeks shy of 13, Sadie lived to be 2 months over 13 while Samantha lived to be 14 years 2 1/2 months. I pray every day Chase and Adam live to be as old as my other newfs.

I also am in uncharted territory with Gracie, never having had a Newf before live beyond 12 yr and 1 month. Here she 13 yr and 8 months. I see her mentally and physically decline a bit but every day I give thanks for her. She still brings me her favourite toys each morning and has a set routine for the day!

Nicholas and Arthur will be 10 years old on 26th, and Evan will be 9 years in October.

I hope your Newfs reach a ripe old age Mary K and I really enjoy Daria escapades so keep them coming!!

I hear you, ladies! Black and White are my first experience with Newfs and really my first dogs as an independent adult. It was fun to have littermates and Black made it to 10 years, 2.5 months, with only the last 4 or 5 months in declining health. White is 2 months short of 11 now and now that he's on Deramaxx he has a new pep in his step. Other than that, he's healthy as a horse. I hope we can all enjoy our seniors and their escapades for a long time to come, especially conniving Daria's entertaining (mis)adventures!

I know the feeling. I tear up thinking we are approaching the end of Snuffles life. Snuffles is 9 as of April 2nd. He goes in for his annual checkup and vaccinations Monday afternoon. I am not expecting any major issues. This is the year rabies is needed. I have been getting 3 years shots and license. I thought to myself, should I only do one year as well as one year license or go with the 3 year. Well, I have decided to do the 3 year for a positive outlook. So I do hope I get my money's worth. :)

I just cherish the time have with the older one's. My past newfs have lived to 1-9 yrs, 1-10 yrs, 1-8 yrs, pyrs 1-11 yrs, 1-12 yrs and 1 mix lived to about 9 yrs. Brooke is 9 and still active for her age. Brooke still goes out to events periodically and loves her time out. Her mom lived to 12 so hopeful have same time with her. Molly is 8 and still doing well.

It is kinda scary when they all age at the same time.......I am a little off the mark, but tow of mine are 6 and one 7, so they would all age together. We can only do our best. mind you there are some unlucky people who's dogs don't even make it to 2 years old.....We just have to love and care for them the best we can :) Ronnie

Sounds like I'm in good company. I enjoy each and every day with my crew (OK....Daria can make some days very trying!;)) but I certainly don't dwell on this. It is what it is and I hope we all have much more time with our wonderful dogs. I'm thankful they are doing well and aging well.

Although my little Annie was a mix, beagle and german shepherd, she lived to be 15 yrs. We lost Lowen our Aussie at 13 yrs and my Coleman at 10yrs.

Tootsie will be 14 yrs old in Oct, Bailey will be 13 yrs this month, Ginger will be 8 yrs in Nov and Sarah just turned 7 yrs. They all have gray on their faces now, Tootsie and Bailey are both dealing with health issues.

I'm always amazed when I see the ages some of the newfs live to. I think it is great. Unfortunately, I have not had great luck with mine. I'm yet to have one live past 8. Lost my first boy at 2, my second boy at 8, and my dear Roger at 7. Right now Shannon is my oldest. She will be 8. My Merlin is almost 7. I think I'm taking it very hard that Merlin is getting older. He still acts very young and loves romping with Odin. Merlin has been that fire under my but that keeps me on my toes and I don't think I want that to go...Not sure if I make sense...

Bailey as a baby would find my last nerve not only step on it but twist too, always with a smile on his face and laughter in his eyes. I still see that puppy when I look into his graying face and miss his youthful antics.

When Echo went she was 13 and 2 weeks and I felt so blessed. We always time our dogs so there is a young to old range, frankly, so we don't lose them all at once. But this left us with two old labs (now 12 each), Moonlight (now 9) and Scarlett who was our youngster at 6 or 7. Then Scarlett came down with something called (and I'll never forget it) Immune Mediated Poly Arthritis. I thought they made it up, but it's real, and it killed her. Now I'm facing all three dogs that are old. Last year was really rough, but the future could leave us dogless for the first time in over 40 years.

Watching our dogs getting elderly may be tough, but look around - look at how many old Newfs there are. My first Newf went at 9 and she was considered very old then. Now, Echo lived to 13 and Moonlight is going strong at 9. Plus, there are so many approaching 13 and even 14 - unheard of years ago. Also, there is now a wealth of information here on NN to help with the aging. So, consider yourself blessed to have an old dog and enjoy every day. Then, when the time comes, you will have a vast storehouse of great memories and be ready to do it all again.

No Need to feel sorry for us. Feel happy we have Newfs who have lived this long. I've learned the hard lesson that sometimes there is no tomorrow... Be it young or old, sometimes we lose our beloved Newfs much too soon.

While it's true my crew is aging, I am still thankful for each and every day I have with them. I feel blessed.
