My poor little girl...

Some of you may recall that my little girl, Zoe, was spayed this morning. She went in at 7:30 AM and came home at 3:00 PM. Poor baby is so sick and confused! She went potty as soon as she came home and then she went straight into her crate. She has been there for almost 4 hours and she has only lifted her head three times to vomit!
I feel so bad for her. She didn't have any food or water before the surgery, but evidently she has something in there to bring back up. Her eyes are so droopy and when she lifts her head, she just barely opens her eyes. I just want to hug her and tell her it will be OK.

I know Ozzy was not like this at all. He was up and around in a few hours. He felt well enough to eat after 3-4 hours. I can tell it is going to be a different story with Zoe.

I know this is normal, but I just feel so bad for my baby. I keep thinking that she is saying, "What did you do to me?"

Please keep her in your thoughts. I know it is a routine procedure, but if I had a total hysterectomy, I would want some sympathy.

Thanks!
Sara with Ozzy and Zoe (poor baby girl)

Sara--my thoughts are definitely with you and Zoe!! I hope she feels better soon, and she will! I'm taking a guess that this kind of thing takes more time for a female to adjust to than a male. Give her lots of hugs from me! Keep us posted.

BAAAADDDD Vet. He/she should have kept her till she was recovered from the antisetic (sp). Sorry you have to go through that horror. I pray she recovers quickly.

Poor Zoe, give her a big hug from me. Keep a close eye on her too so she doesnt get dehydrated with the vomitting! Wishing her a quick recovery!

I feel bad for Zoe, poor thing that she's so uncomfortable. Kodi was kept overnight after being spayed which is a requirement of our vet. Hope Zoe is feeling better real soon and back to her old self

Sara that was exactly how Tayla was the afternoon when we bought her home. I think she threw up five times in total. Don't worry though if she is anything like Tayla the next morning you would never know what she had been through. She went from being so sick to running and jumping the very next morning. Hope Zoe's recovery is as speedy. It breaks your heart to see them so sick and sad looking doesn't it. Give her a big hug form us.

I know how you feel, I also felt gilty when we took Misha to neutering. And she felt it and used it too. She was such a poor baby for a whole week! She stayed in her bed for a whole time. She wouldn't get up except to go out. Not even to eat. She would just cry and I'd run to her - broth her fresh water and food. I really thought she's in great pain... But then we went out for just a short walk and we'd ran into her friend... well it was then I found out she was just using the situation. She played with that dog so much and just wanted to play more after I stopped her (afraid for her stiches). Of course it was all the same when we came back home - poor dog, laying in her bed feeling sorry to everyone. And I'd let her - but it did feel good to know she was mostly faking.

Just hug your newf and tell her she'll be all right. I'm sure she'll understand. And give her a special treatment, God knows she deserves it after the operation.

Sara, I've mentioned this a couple of times in earlier posts and I don't mind mentioning it again: give her Pedialyte instead of water. It's wonderful for dehydration and the electrolytes in the liquid will help bring her out of her doldrums. I gave it to my Nani for 24 hours to help bring her out of her stupor from her plane trip and it helped tremendously. You can get it at Walmart in the baby section (Ok you probably already know that but just in case
).

Give her a big kiss and hug from me and please know my prayers are with her for a speedy recovery. I agree that her vet should've kept her overnight so they could monitor her and let her sleep off the drugs (mine did when I had one of my kittens neutered) but some doctors just don't.

The vomiting, though. Now that concerns me. I've never had an animal vomit after a sterilization my whole living life. Is that normal?

Oh poor Zoe. Please give her a hug for me. I read your post yesterday and like Kanela I wonder too, if vomiting is normal. I don't think I have ever had this problem after this type of surgery either. Perhaps someone else knows for sure. I hope she is feeling better today. Big hugs for you both.

Poor Zoe.
spay is so intrusive to them, that she will be out of it, but you will notice her come around quickly once she does, maybe offer her in a few hours a small amount of food.
some vets say no food for so long after, i think it just depends on the individual dog.
also, fasting one day out of 2 weeks is actually very healthy for them, a practice i used to do regularly, but not much anymore.
keep an eye on the stitch area, make sure it does not bleed, if it does dont hesitate to call your vet.
give her many hugs from us, i have been watching for your post.

Wow, Morgan must have recovered amazingly well. I don't remember her vomiting at all. I know her surgery was early in the morning and we didn't pick her up until late evening. She didn't seem to mind much at all and is still happy to go to the vet. She did have a little redness around her stitches, but that didn't last long, either. Lucky girl. I hope your baby gets over it relatively soon. We all hate to see them suffer.

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions and newfie hugs & kisses. I am pleased to announce that Zoe is back to herself this evening. This morning she was still a little confused and was sick again as soon as she woke up. My husband was home with her all day. He called me at 9:00 am to say that he persuaded her to eat some toast (
). That was the first and only thing that she agreed to eat. Then this afternoon he called me to say that he put down her breakfast around noon and she ate it this time... and with vengeance!! Tonight when I came home from work, she was the same "Zo-Zo" that we love so dearly. doG Bless her!!

For what it's worth, I asked around and most of the vets in this area don't keep them overnight. As for the vomiting, it is my understanding that it is not uncommon for animals to vomit when coming out of anesthesia. I probably would, too!

My thanks, again, to everyone for their warm wishes for a speedy recovery. I appreciate it.

BTW, Ozzy was so cute last evening. He would stick his head in Zoe's crate and "check on her" periodically. He sensed that she wasn't well and he kept his distance, but wanted to make sure that his little sister was OK.

Thanks.

I am so happy to hear that Zoe is back to being herself. It is so hard on us when our babies are sick. They seem to handle it better than we do! Give her huge hugs for me.

I'm also glad your baby feels better - and it's great to know you care enough to call different vets to ask questions. Zoe and Ozzy are in good hands!
