My old ladies are starting to slow down...

Daria at 11 has been on and off for quite a while. We had a patch a couple weeks ago where we were certain it was time to set her free. She has since rebounded once again and is her happy and sassy self. Thank goodness! My daughter has a tendency to get morose and focus on the negative. Daria had a particularly bad day recently and my daughter was lamenting that fact. I told her to focus on the fact that Daria was alive and still with us and while she may be going through a bad time now, she's not nearly ready to give up the ghost. Celebrate each moment we have with her and be thankful for that. Daria will no doubt go on her own terms. I have to laugh thinking she may even go as one of the longest living Newfoundlands. Who knows. This is Daria we are talking about......:alc:

Maia is 9 1/2. We took a long walk the other day as she so loves her walka walkas". She did pretty well but started petering out halfway through. She was much more brisk and energetic on our way back to the car:angel: I guess from now on she'll be my walking buddy instead of my exercise buddy. I'm one of those that if I don't do my workout first thing in the morning, it won't happen. With Mai's slowing down, I'll now get two walks in a day:D I'll do my thing right off and then she can have her walka walkas in the evening. Win win for everyone.

Faith is a little pokey and bitchier than normal at 9 but other than that, she's just fine. She has greyed more than anyone else.

Stormie is the one showing the most change. She's 10. She's always been the most "chill" of the bunch. Lives her days in the basement until the burst of energy hits her and then she's either outside playing or "supervising" the ones who are playing. Lately you can tell her hearing is going. And her cognitive function isn't the best:darn: The other day I was calling for the dogs to go potty outside. Everyone came but Stormie. I found her at the bottom of the stairs in her usual place. She was just sitting there but she was turned towards me so she could see I was talking to her but nothing was making sense. We often find her sitting in the yard looking out into space. SO not like her. I may try her on fish oil or coenzyme q10. Because of her food sensitivities, she cannot take the same stuff that works so well for Daria.

Who was the brainiac who thought it was great to get lots of young dogs all at once?? I do love having pups close in age as they are younger but I didn't think long term.....down the road. On the other hand, with so many Newfs passing at a young age these days, I'm thankful to have this...dilemma ..and thankful for each day I have with my beautiful girls.

Love hearing about them Mary K. I have to agee, it was wonderful having several close together in age as youngsters but like you I didn't really visualize them getting old and it was hard to lose them. Though, Evan is 11 next month and does not think much of Decker.
Give them all a hug from me.

Thank you Angela. Hopefully in time Evan will come to like Decker. Sometimes the youngsters can breathe new life into our oldsters. And other times the oldsters just tolerates them...

Mary K, I remember all the things you use to post about Daria. She was truly a wild child! It was always to entertaining to read your posts!

If I remember right aren't Faith and Chase half siblings? Same Sire. Chase is doing well at 10 years and 7 months. Running and jumping around like always. She is starting to gray but not a whole lot.

I know what you mean about getting too many close in age. One year we lost 2 within 6 months. Now Chase is the only one left of my crew of 5 newfs and 1 saint. I hope to have many more years with her. Right now my heart won't let me get another dog. I feel that the few years Chase has left will be just her with lots of spoiling.

Oh...I tend to be like your daughter...I have to grieve in advance or my grief would be to much to bear...I couldn't deal with all my babies being at this age...I already dread the day when the next one leaves for the bridge...I just wish they could all be as old as my boy Dex was when he passed at 13 but it still wasn't enough time and we still cry when we speak of him...I hope your babies will be here a long time to come...

Thanks Jeannie. Daria isn't so much of a wild child anymore:( I've had the duct tape off the fridge for a couple weeks now hoping to see her be her naughty self once again. So far no dice. But, she still greets us in the morning and when we come home and she's hanging in there.

Yup, Chase and Faith are half sisters. She still plays with the other dogs and is still her cute happy self. I hope you have lots more time with Chase. She's such a sweetie and such a beautiful girl.

WOW Dex did lead a good long life. But as you said, it's never nearly enough time.

Enjoy every minute with each of them, no matter what age it is not enough. Give them all a special kiss
