My mind found NutzyCat's, but it got lost along the way

OK. Is there such a thing as a 'learning plateau' in dogs? Or is it all attitude. This week Bubba just simply refuses the down command. He'll sit, he'll heel, come (most of the time) but you say down, and he looks at you. . . try to coax him and he gives attitude, shoving my hand away with his head, or 'snuffing' at me and turning his head away. Is it possible he's forgotten down, or is he just stubborn.

Hehe Julie, Jake can be that way too unless of course there is food involved. Jake gets really mouthy though, I will give him the down command and he will bark at me we will repeat this about 3 times and then he just throws himself down like a child not getting their own way. Bubba probably, if he is anything like Jake, is just being stubborn LOL. I swear there are days Jake pushes all my buttons on purpose  .

Our trainer did say that many dogs go thru what she calls the "duh stage." This is when a dog has a few months when it appears it's lost all it's ability to follow commands! All our money on obedience classes down the tube  She did say that they will eventually come out of this stage. I, however, have come to the conclusion that Yogi is just being Newfie :D And I love him still....

The hardest command for Kodi was the "down". I used Jeannie's suggestion. I made him sit and held a treat out in front of his nose and then slowly lowered it to the floor all the time repeating the word "down" and giving him alot of good boy praises. It worked :D

Yep, just like Jake. I decided last night to go back to food reward and see if that helped, and he's doing the exact same as Jake, he doesn't bark, just snuffs at me and flops down. Of course still expects the treat when he does. And I of course give it to him. ;) I guess he is just being stubborn. This morning when we went for our morning ritual, he just looked at me when I called him back. Of course, I was running late. I took 2 steps towards him and he came, but at his own pace, not running to me as he usually does. I'd swear he rolled his eyes at me. I think the more frustrated I get, the more stubborn he gets. Oh the joys of parenthood!

It seems that during the 6th or 7th week of any obedience class, many dogs just seem to "forget" everything. I've heard that that is when everything they've learned is transferred from short term memory to long term memory.

I've seen this happen to dogs in Puppy, Beginner and Advanced Beginner... Anyway, I wouldn't worry... it's pretty normal. They haven't forgotten!!!!

Rory seems to be doing well with her training so far, but my two adolescent twin boys seem to be having a similar problem with this selective memeory thing. They seem to only remember what they want to. Maybe adolescent fur kids go through the same stage of life.
