My Dog, My Hero

Jordan is having book fair at his school this week and he bought me a book (My Dog, My Hero...not sure of the author(s)...the book is in the car right now). It is a book of short stories sent in by different people of why their dogs should win the dog hero medal. It is very touching.

The 2nd story is of Bear, a Newfoundland, that rescues the neighbor's dog after she fell into a frozen pond. And then I look around me and all I see are 3 big couch potatoes and floor rugs!
:D

Oh Rachel,
You can laugh. I read about all these "heroics" of our chosen breed and then I have the boys.

The only thing they do is steal food, chase the cat, and run me ragged fetching things for THEM! They have me well-trained.

I still like to think that if faced with a situation, they would respond appropiately, but if a murderer walked in and had anything from a steak to a piece of peppermint with them....I'd be HISTORY!!

My newfoundland (Solo) is like yours - very laid back. He doesn't do much without motiviation. His big thing is to go to town in the car lol. I don't think he's done anything particularly heroic... but there is one thing he does that I really appreciate. When we go hiking - it's me, my husband, Solo and our collie mix Leo (my avatar)... Anyway, I'm the slowest in the bunch and Solo will *always* walk along behind me to make sure I don't get left behind
Once in a while, he'll take off to the front but then comes right back to make sure I don't get lost hee hee

I think our goofball dogs would save us if needed.... unless someone showed up with food... and then it's anyody's guess. They all get A.D.D. when food is around...

Acutally, Russell slipped and fell on his butt last Saturday (our yard was an ice rink). He was out with Cora, Kira & Sailor, and he said that all three came right to him and seemed to be quite concerned..... so maybe they would come through.....

And, luckily, the only thing hurt was his pride! ;)

When we first took Oz to the lake and beach we had to teach him "NOT DROWNING!" cause he would get all concerned and go after the liitle kids splashing around in the water having fun and squeeling. At first, the only time he seemed to relax in the water, was if it was quiet and kid free.
If a baby cries on t.v., he flips out and tries to get behind the tv, so we had to teach him "on the television" too. He howls at the doorbell in the dominoes commercials too! He is such a watch dog, but I wonder what it would be like if the postman had a t-bone with him ;)
Annie, glad your hubby is okay!

The lesson at next week's obedience class is to not take food from strangers. Yeah right ... I'll believe that one when I see it. The trainer has worked with a lot of newfies but I'm not sure she understands just what a task that will be. :D

I've taught everyone of my dogs to NEVER take from a stranger.

They also never pick anything up from a yard or sidewalk.

It can be done! ;)

It makes Newman's day to go to the drive-thru windows (bank, pharmacy, McDonalds) and get treats! They even try to take "treats" when people are actually EATING them!!

Good luck :D

My dogs don't even take from the bank tellers, unless I tell 'em it's okay. Then, again, they aren't allowed to eat in the car. :D On a RARE occassion, I will hand them a treat, but, even then...they are hesitant to take it, Ahnzlo has YET to eat a treat I've handed him , in the car. :D

We had this little ice cream store with a drive thru...when we would bring Taylor they would see us at the speaker and when we ordered a "small dish of ice cream" they would put little dog treats all around it. Cute and she loved it! They'd say is Taylor along??? Needless to say she was a hit almost everywhere we went. They all loved her!

And yes we let her eat in the car. "Bad us!"
