My baby, my protector

Thought I would share my first protector story.

I was getting Uwe's dinner ready this evening when the doorbell rang. Uwe looked at me, looked towards the door and knew he had to wait. I walked to the door with him right behind me. I opened the front door and looked out the screen door. There was a man standing just off my stoop. He proceeded to give me his sales pitch all the while unaware of the very large, black dog pacing behind me. The man reached back into his bag to get me the coupon book he was selling and apparently Uwe didn't care for that at all! Uwe stepped forward between me and the door and darn near scared the bejeezus out of the poor guy. His response was "wow, that's a really big dog....it's a dog, right?"

Although in his defense, I'm only 5 feet tall and Uwe's head comes up my waist...maybe it makes Uwe looks bigger than he is. :D

Good job Uwe! And good job Shawn for training him so well to behave when people come to the door! That's what I love about newfies ... they are protective but in a subtle sense ... no snarling and thrashing, just placing themselves between you and the threat as if to say "Yeah, I'm here ... wanna make something of it?"

Great job Uwe!
And his favorite snacks are salesmen!
Now if we could just train them to scare off the phone solicitors!

That is so right on the mark. Murphy will even get between two other dogs at the dog park that are having issues. Just park himself between them. And he will dutifully walk by side unless someone approaches. Then he will move in fromt of me as if to say, move along buster!

Koda has gotten betwen us, and people before. The one I really remember was last summer when the man came to work on the hot tub. I wasn't home, but Mike said Koda got between him, and the man, and wouldn't move. The man jumped up on the steps to the hot tub to get away from him. Koda is such a big baby we found this really humerous!!
