More supplements...C & E

It was recommended (breeder) that I give Moya 200iu of E and 2000mg of C (split between AM and PM). 2000mg of C seems excessive to me...for an adult human the jar says one a day and she is only 29 pounds.

Exactly what are these supplements for (in dogs)? Is C for immune and E for joint health?

Thanks kids...

That sure is a lot of vit C for a pup. She may have meant for an adult dog. I give Rory 400 mg. vit E and the C is part of the gluc/chon complex. It is only 100 mg. and I know I could give more. These two vitamins help with the absorbsion of the gluc/chon.

Kodi gets 1000mg of Vit C and 800IU Vit E along with gluc/chron/MSN/perna canaliculus (green lipped mussel). Does it go according to age the amount of supplements that should be added to their diet?

Interesting that we're all giving VERY different amounts. Would like to hear from some others too. Let's ask our vets the next time our pets go and see what they have to say.

If you look back on old posts of this subject, that is exactly what you will find - everyone giving different amounts from different manufacturers of the same vitamins. It is even the same for food - different amounts of different brands. And unless you have a vet that believes in supplements, you may get another opinion. And we all have healthy, thriving dogs.
I think you have to come to your own conclusions based upon your research and what works best for Moya. I have found that most people don't even know about these supplements, so I think the fact that our dogs are getting the best foods and the added supplements puts them a step ahead. Your pup should be getting, at her age, half the suppelment dossage of what you will give her when she is an adult. Now she is young so she does not need massive amounts.

Everyone in my house gets 2000 of C every day. They get 1000 at breakfast and 1000 at dinner. I also give 400 of E every other day.

C helps the immune system as well as being good for joint health. It will sluff off through the urine if it's not all needed. You cannot overdose on C.

I always thought the same as everyone about the vit C, that you can't have too much, etc., then I read a new study last year (unfortunately I can't locate it) that they are finding that too much actually breaks down the cells and immune system. So now I am very confused. But once I hear something negative, then it puts doubt in my mind. So now I use it in moderation.

Karen, I am very familiar with Dr. Linus Pauling and his study. The study I read refuted his findings. I read this last year, and now I am going to see if I can track it down, as I am more curious now. If I find it, I will let you know. I know these studies can drive one nuts, as one day something is good for you and the next day it is not. That is why I will try to track this study so I can take a closer look at it, as vitamins and supplements are very important to myself and my dogs.

i also disagree with the theory it shortens the life, Sampson lived past 13 yrs, he was a black newf, healthy as an ox, haddeveloped a heart murmur at 11 than at 12 it was a stage three, than at 13 back down to stage one, go figure, but.....the only reason we put him to rest, was. he lost his muscle tone, and i believe he had a stroke of some kind, he kept falling into walls.
i have fed vit c to all my guys from the beginning and i will continue to do so.

Karen - I'm not saying this study is right. Dr. Pauling is a very respected scientist to me, but he did his work many years ago and science does progress. The only thing these new studies do for me is to put doubt in my mind. I have cut back a little on the vit C and hopefully have reached a happy medium. I brought the article I read and the article that Brenda sent me to everyone's attention so they could make their own judgement. I think we all have to read the literature and derive our own conclusions.

I think how long your dogs lived cannot be scientifically attributed to the vitamin C they took. There are too many factors in how long a dog or person will live.
One of my dogs died at age 7 from thrombocytopenia (spelling) which is an autoimmune disease - and she was on mega doses of vitamin C.

Karen-had another thought about the vit C. I was talking to the man that developed the kibble I use, as he is a dog nutritionist, regarding vit C. He said it is important for dogs only if it is Ester C. Is that what you use? Why do you think Ester C would be a better choice for dogs? I find it interesting that there are so many different opinions on this.

Lynn,
I give my dogs 2000 mg of Ester C daily. I was told that ester c will not cause stomach irritations so that is why I chose to use it. I also give 400iu of Vit E per day. My vet said it was a good choice of antioxidents when I asked her about it the other day. Also she told me that Vit B complex increases appitite. (spelling?)

The nutritionist at my health food co-op also says that the Ester C is time released, so it provides C on a continuing basis throughout the day. She also says that it contains no chemicals in it's preparation. It's a shame it's so darned expensive!
