Moose toilet training tips

Hi all,

Looking for some advice from the wise NN peoples!

Moose is nearly 4 months old and we're really struggling with the pee side of the toilet training. He has had his number 2's in that regard sorted really quickly (thank goodness!) but still goes to pee wherever he happens to be standing when the urge comes on.

He has a doggy door- so can let himself out when he likes, but I also take him out onto the grass for 'pee breaks' often and he gets a treat and a massive daggy dance by me when he succesfully goes, but a lot of the time when he doesn't need to go, 5 mins after being back inside he pees like a racehorse.

He's also a double or triple pee'er now and then and will do another one or two within 5-10 mins of his last one.

He had a uti about 6 weeks ago which was treated with antibiotics, and his behaviour now is definitely different to how he was when he was sick with that- large pees instead of a constant dribble.

Any tips on how to get him to realise that outside is for peeing would be appreciated! Sorry for the extreme overload of information on Moose's bladder habbits...

:)

I think it took us three almost four months from when we got Gilly for her housetraining to be complete. We did all the basic stuff everyone tells you to do, but we just had to wait until it "clicked" for her. I tried to teach her to ring a bell but she never got that. I took her out on a timer every two hours and increased the time slowly. One day, after lots of carpet cleaning she just got it! One tip off she did give was that she almost always wanted to be with us but when she had to pee she would start walking away. From that point we had about 5 seconds to get her outside before an "accident" would happen. Not a lot of advice here, but be patient! It'll happen!

I would use the umbilical system for a while. Because of the infection, you will have to restart a bit and you have to be the one to let him out frequently. Like you are doing high praise when he does something. if he starts to go and because you are on the other side of the leash, pick him up and let it finish outside. i ignore mistakes. Just kick my own butt for letting it happen. I am a little boring when I take them outside, until they have done the p's...After that we have a reward and play or walk. That teaches puppy nothing fun happens until i have done my business.
UTI's put a bit of a spanner in the works and you have to restart.
Just make sure you really clean the messed areas, sothat no smell is left..i use orange spray to get rid of the scent, good luck

We were spoiled with Indy, she was very fast with toilet training. Cosmo, he was a different story. Several people told me that boys may be harder to train than girls. Remember the times that they usually have to go like right after they wake up, drink, eat, play. I would put Moose on a leash and I would take him out using a command. At the door I ask them if they want to go out. As they got older I could ask that question and a lot of times I will get a bark in acknowledgement. Once outside I would work on a command. Go potty works well, but you can be creative as long as you are consistent. I would not take him back inside after the first pee either. Walk around for a little bit and let him sniff to make sure that he won't want to pee again. If he doesn't pee when he goes outside, then I wouldn't let more than maybe five minutes maximum go by before I would take him outside again to encourage him to pee. I think that a lot of overkill right now will pay off big time. Don't worry, he will get it! He is just a baby. I know it's frustrating. Before long you will be able to look back and remember all this trouble and wonder how you got such a good boy! :kgo_027:
