mild limping

my newf pupp is 5 1/2 months old. lately we've been taking her to the park where she loves to run around and romp with other dogs. I've also noticed a mild limp while walking her and even last time at the park she sat down while others were playing(which i'm sure is hard for her to do) My mom who has a standard poodle said she probably has a sprain and to lay off the exercise for 2 weeks. My trainer said it could be salt from the street, growing pains or over exercise. I'm really unsure as to how much exercise to give her. Any comments? I hate to keep her indoors, but I'd like the limp to go away.

I am fortunate enough to have a VERY dog friendly park near me as well. I take my 7 month old, Ese, almost every day to play with the other dogs there. It's a huge park and we stay in the center where the dogs can play off-lead. He spends at least an hour there. More often it's 2 hours. At this point it is his absolute favorite thing in life! So I know how you feel about the possibility of having to take that away - even for a little while.

Okay, after that all-to-long reply to express my empathy, I recommend seeing your vet just to play it safe. However, the others that are regulars on this forum are an absolute WEALTH of information! They will be able to provide better advice.

Please keep us updated.

Tayla our Newfie limped on and off from when she was about five months. It turns out that she has moderate hip displaysia. Hopefully nothing to worry about though.
As far as excercise our breeder told us to only exercise her for about 10 minutes a day until she was 18 months old and not to let her run flat out or jump until that age either. She was very strong in these points and we unfortunately didn't stick to them well enough and let Tay play with other dogs and run and jump with them. Maybe this may have caused her displaysia.
It may only be growing pains but you should see your vet just in case. Hopefully it will be nothing to worry about and your baby will grow out of it.
Good luck.

Limping can be caused by several things. It could be, that she sprang some muscels... this should go away in no time. If it does, don't worry. But if her limpimg goes on a vet is the proper choice. In the mean time I'd suggest you keep an eye on her - don't let her play with other dogs, better take her for a walk and you play with her (this way you can control the roughness of the play).

Good luck

When a young newf is limping, they should immediatly be limited in activity, including being walked on leash to potty at home, and activity indoors limited also, loose joints can be injured, think of them as having cartilege for 18 months instead of bone.

We are taking lucy to the vet today. I'm a new newf mom and am worried that it may be more serious than a sprain. I guess I rather be safe than sorry. If anyone has any more advice on new puppies I'd certainly welcome it.

When Kodi was 5-6 months old he developed a noticeable limp in his front left leg while in the house. We had extensive x-rays done at the vet and the limping was diagnosed as panosteitis which is a self-limiting disease affecting the long leg bones and appears between 5 and 18 months old. The cause is unknown, but high-protein diets seem to make the symptoms worse or last longer. It was suggested that we change Kodi's diet from Eukanuba large breed puppy to the adult large breed formula which has less protein. After being on the lower protein diet he is no longer limping. If the limping doesn't go away, I'd have x-rays done.

lucy, my dog with the mild limp was taken to the vet yesterday. She placed her on 50 mg of Rimadyl for two weeks. I've read mixed reviews about this medication. I know they use it for older dogs for arthritis, do you think it's harmful for a short period for my puppy? I haven't noticed any side effects yet. We are also suppose to limit activity which we have been doing anyway

Kodi too was put on Rimadyl. 50mg for 10 days when diagnosed with pano. I believe it was for the inflamation. He seemed to be able to put more pressure on his leg with less limping with the medication. Walking, running, jumping etc were also limited.

A newf that young doesnt need any exercise at all especially playing rough house with other dogs . light walks around the house outside is enough .i personally wouldnt even exercise tuggs until he is at least 18 months , and when i say exercise i mean go for long walks or play briskly with other dogs . but thats just what i wopuld do.
