matts under ears

I feel really terrible. Today I realised that the silky hair under Rory's ears is growing out matted near the skin. I'm obviously not getting the comb up far enough to the roots of the hair. I use a fine toothed comb on the ears and feet and a rake and a brush on the rest of the body.

We sat down and worked steadily on one ear but after that one was matt-free, she'd had enough so I have to do the other one tomorrow. She was very good actually, it didn't seem to hurt which is good.

Ack! Stuff like this makes me feel so guilty, I'm going to REALLY focus on the ears from now on.

Don't feel guilty about this one! Last winter I paid a lot of attention to Misha's ears - I combed her thoroughly every day. And every day there were mats behind her ears! And it did hurt her, so I stoped being so thorough. For a while I just cut of every mat that wouldn't easilly be split. I don't know what happened than, but now we don't have any problems with ears anymore -the hair is easy to comb and it doesn't mat.

Of course now we have different problems with her behind - the hair is so thick there and always wet...

I guess that's why they look so good - because of a thick long hair that it's difficult to comb!

You can also use thinning shears to thin out and shorten that behind the ear fluff, as well as the long hair on the ears themselves. That helps make combing them out less uncomfortable for the pups. My guys are always chewing on each others' ears, so I'm constantly combing that area out.

Odin also has very thick fur on the behind that doesn't dry well after a swim. Can, or should, the fur be thinned here?

Cathy,
Yes it can be trimmed with thinning shears. There are 2 ways, first to thin it place the thinning shears next to the skin against the hair growth direction and cut. Be sure to comb out the trimmed hair or you may cut too much. Second, to shorten, lay the shears on the top of the coat and make cuts along the outside in the direction of the hair growth.
