Over the last few months - say, since September - Elvis has been getting really large mats in his chest fur. We comb him out, use the blower on him, and generally keep his chest fur thinned out. He's never had this problem before.
I guess I'd say they're more like large tangles - the fur isn't matted right at his skin, more like a big knot about halfway through the hair, if that makes sense. I can easily get my fingers between his skin and the mess of fur.
I feel like these happen within a day - Sunday he'll be combed and sleek, but then by Tuesday he's got a big hunk of tangled fur again.
He's not a big drooler and while he's a messy drinker, his chest is never really wet. He has taken a huge interest in his toys again since he's been recovering from his TPLO, so maybe his fur gets messy from where he holds his toys and chews on them?
Sometimes I can brush the tangle out, but other times I have to snip it out. He's still furry enough that you can't tell, but I'm worried after a few more cuts he's going to look pretty funky.
