Is there any special technique to using this? Is it used the same way you would brush?

Thanks

HI Diane,

I read your post on CN, but I will answer it here. Yes you can cut/scratch the dog if you are not careful. Just don't comb to fast and you will be fine. When I use mine, I seperate the hair so I comb from the skin out--just like combing or brushing. At first you could use it on a daily basis but after you get the undercoat out once a week should be plenty.

Ok Jeannie another question LOL, what is best to use for the mats at the ears? I can't use clippers because Jake will not stand for that noise at his ears and I don't want to cut them out for fear I would cut his ear.

Thanks

If the mats are tight to the skin you have no other choice but to shave them out. Most groomers should shave them out for you while you wait/help--at least I do. It should be easier especially if the groomer has the double K clippers where the motor is not in the handset. Makes for quieter clippers. Another thing you can try is putting cotton in his ears. Also I tell all puppy owners to take an old set of clippers, razors or whatever they have that runs with a buzzing sound. I tell them to pet the dog with them, then after a while turn them on and rub them on the dog while giving treats. It works to help them overcome their fear of buzzing noises/clippers. Be sure when you turn them on that YOU don't change your attitude about the clippers. If you get nervous or anxious then the dog will pick up on it and thing something is wrong. When you turn it on do not go straight for the dog's head either. Start near the back and work your way around the body saving the head/neck area for last--after he realizes it is not going to bite. Also at first if you just lay the running clipper on them without moving it around some dogs tend to tolerate that better. Just talk smoothly to the dog and keep it happy.

If they are not tight then you can work them out by splitting them with your shears or an envelope opener or anything that is sharp on ONE side. After you split the mat, it can be worked out easier. It is a slow process, but it can be done.

Diane,

I am so glad you like it. I believe every newf owner should own at least one Mars Coat King.

Ok I'll admit how stupid I was here.

I had taken Jake swimming several times in one week, then bathed him and let him air dry. All of his undercoat was not out, and he ended up with mats after his bath, including one huge one on his back. In hindsight, I should have just cut it out. But I went after it with the Mars Coat King. It was lent to me at the groomers, they also lent me all of their other mat cutting combs and brushes. The MCK worked the best. It was incredible. I was a little rough though, and I lightly abraded (sp) his skin where the mat was. :( Kind of scraped it. I did get the mat out, and he looked a little naked there, kind of like an afghan hound's saddle. It's just now growing out.
So the Coat King can be rough, but boy it sure cuts thru hair! I'm looking at getting one for home. But I'll be very careful with it. I also really brush (with a rake) this boy out before we go swimming.
By the way, Jake has forgiven me...

Gary washed our girls one day and let them air dry. I had mats--unbelieveable mats--to comb out. The MKC worked wonders!!! I don't know how I lived without mine!!!

Jeannie I just ordered another one the #10 I believe is what they recommended for the mats around the ears and such. I love the one you recommended so thought I would try this one in the smaller area's around the face.

I got that one and the #8 and the fine double wide one too. I use them all. Of course the original one I told everyone about is the best all 'round one to have.

Jeannie - THANK YOU! When everyone else was raving about this, I wanted to try it too. I brush Luna every day but when I put the Mars Coat King through her fur I came up with tons of dead coat...

So now the question - do I just replace the blades every so often, or do they get "sharpened" somehow?

Thank you!!

Jeannie,

What size shuold I get for Flower? She 13 pounds of pomeranian shaped fluff? Is there any chance of one that works on her AND on a newf?

The blades need to be replaced when these get dull. I would say in about a year you should replace them. You can order the blades from the same website.

Laura,

You can get the MCK in three different sizes Original is about 1" wide the double wide is 2" wide and the triple is 3" wide. You could get an original for Flower and a double wide for a newf. You could use one for both but you would have to decided if you want to use a little one on a newf or a big one on Flower. If it were me I would choose to use the double wide on Flower.
