Little Isaiah's in surgery

I'm a nervous wreck. Little Isaiah is in surgery. He started limping last week. Whisked him right off to the Ortho. He has ocd in his shuolder. Though, it doesnt' appear to be OCD in the term I researched. basically, there's a tiny malformation in the upper part of his shoulder joint which wore off a piece of cartiledge in his shoulder. It's not thickened immature cartilege but a little over curvature in the socket. Regardless, the procedure is the same except they will smooth off that corner too when they clean out the cartiledge. Pretty much, it's the same surgery my daughter had on her knee when her miniscus tore.

He has to stay overnight. I'm waiting by the phone for his post op update. Poor little dumpling. First I cut off his manly jewels and then this.

I asked the doctor if it was anything I did that caused this and she said no. Just a little genetic hiccup. The preop appontment was funny in one way. She was expecting me to be upset, but I was just so thrilled that he had something fixable, I was really calm. She checked everything else out too. His knees are great. nice and tight. His hips have sub lux, but as hes only 6 months old, this could fix or not with age. I asked her what I coud do about it. Being a surgeon, she immediately started outlinng a procedure that involve breakign the hip into 6 pieces. I quickly stopped her and explained I meant in terms of exercise. I told her that was way too extreme an approach to take for something that may never be a problem. She agreed, and seemed to breathe a sigh of releif. She asked what I wanted to do next. I told her I wanted the surgery done asap. that was last Thursday. I could see something was bothering her, and I kept waitng for her to spit it out. Finally, as she was writing up his surgery info, she asked, "Don't you want to even know how much it's going to cost?"
I told her the truth. It didnt' matter. Isaiah needed his shoulder fixed. I explained to her that I figured over the course of his life isaiah could cost me upwards of 10k as he's a giant breed and no matter how good his parent's clearances were, I'm practical and nature can be funky. I spent over 5k on my previous newf on skin issues alone which were finally resolved but not until medical knowledge caught up wiht his allergies.

Apparently, most of their client either begrudge paying for medical, or just don't anticapte the dogs ever needing medical and dont' have it.

Ok. I'm rambling. Just stressed waiting to hear how Isaiah is doing.

best,

Holly

Oh Holly ... poor Isiah, but I'm actually thrilled to hear it's something fixable! It sounds like he's in great shape otherwise so I'm sure he'll come through with flying colors... still it doesn't make this time any easier! I'm sure they'll call soon and let you know he's out of surgery and taking a good long nap.

By the way ... I love your pragmatic attitude! I'll be thinking of that cute little guy ... keep us updated!

Just got the call. Isaiah is out of Surgery. Everything went cleanly. He's coming out of anethesia just fine. They are putting him on adequan. Good thing I read posts here so I remembered to ask. Injectable Adequan is not stocked by my vet so I had to give them a heads up to order it.

The vet said he is going to be in major pain. I have him all set up so he doesn't have to walk more than ten feet to go potty. Cleared the ice and snow. (Used ice melt which means I'll be replacing the grass and plantings too. wry grin) I've got the wood hauling sling to help him get about at first if needed.

I'm ready for everything except that expressive little face he'll turn on me that says, "Mommy. I've got a boo-boo."

Again, at least it's fixable. I was imagining horrible horrible things.

Thanks for the kind words and support.

Holly

I am glad he's out of surgery!!! Good mum for clearing the snow that will help both your nerves. Oz had suregery 13 days ago and we are using a sling, took me awhile to get used to it, but it is now my best friend ;)
best wishes to both of you!!

Thanks everyone for the support. I miss the little guy. And I know he's stressing without his mommy. He's worse than a hearding dog for being a momma's boy. I just hope he's so doped up he isn't aware of the passing of tme.

I'm keeping my 17 year old son home from school tomorrow as I may need help with him. I hope his other shulder doesn't have the same issue. They took an xray but I wont' know the result until tomorrow. Sheesh! Look at me borrowing trouble and we haven't even gotten over this yet. <G> You wouldnt' think I'd miss him with 5 other dogs around, but we have our routines, and everyone just stopped and sat when it was Isaiah's usual turn to climb into mommie's lap.

I've cooked him up a chicken stew so he will have somethign to tempt his appetite. And something easy on hsi tunny. He's so rangy, he doesn't ahve a spare pound to lose. Wish I had that problem. I also bought him some snap peas. He just loves those things. And if he's really good, or really tragic, I'll bake him a sweet potatoe.

Holly, feeling the gap.

Thanks for the article link. No. That's what I was expecting. Basically. take your hand andstretch the fingers into a half circle. This would represent the top of the shoulder socket. In a perfect world it is a perfect 1/2 circle. Then take your index finger and curve it slightly inward. That's the joint malformation. Very slight, but just enough to nip off the cartilege.

Because I caught it very early and immediately put him on crate rest when he started limping, the cartiledge did not get a chance to fragment or cause further damage. The ortho said overall a very clean surgery.

I hope being on adequan post op for a month will keep him having a problem in the other shoulder. Joints tend to grow symetrically.

Again, of all the problems he oculd have, this is minor. Even his hips don't bother me as the joints are perfectly formed. Any sublux is considered dysplasia, but if his had to be classified, it woudl be minor though he would not pass Ofa. then again, He's only 6 months old. Xrays at this point could be indicative of a problem that will get worse with age, gte better with age, or remain the same. I tend to worry about problems when they get here. His knees being bad woudl stress me more tha his hips, but those are very tight and "beautiful" according to the ortho. When he's over his recovery, the vet wants him out walking. Uphill, of course. Every ortho tells me that. I hate walking uphill. <G>

While she agress swimming is the best exercise, she said it's the same with humans, Very few people can get their dogs to swim enough to actually get any benefit. Isaiah hasn't beeen in deep water yet, but when he does, we'll slap a life preserver on him and attach him to the kayak and take him out for spins.

I can't wait to get him home so I can see for myself that he's ok.

Best,

Holly
