So here I am, first pic ever with the humans involved!! Its all about Larry though, and I am even amazed about how big he his! soooooo. . . . . .

Facts:
Larry was 7 1/2mos old.
Larrys parents left on vacation. April 12.(Larrys parents are now realizing that leaving baby at a young age might not have been the best choice, but, what is done is done)
Larry stayed with gma & gpa.
Day one: gpa feeds Larry Chicken Jerkey ( Larry has NEVER eaten anything other than his normal food)
Day 2-3: Larry stops eating.
Day 3: gpa buys new food and canned food and mixes special treats for baby Larry for the next 6 days.
Larrys parents return home April 21. Larry decides not to eat for 4 days, he nibbles on the gpa kibble and treats. He drank plenty of water, no barfing, and pooing what little food he did eat on a timely basis.
update: 2 weeks later he his still being picky. he is back up to about 4c or so a day. but we had to change food. the old stuff wasnt cutting it. he would smell it and walk away. I suspect that there also might have been human food involved while he was at daycare. I am 99% sure he is not sick.He is running, drinking water, and not lethargic. I am trying to stick to my guns, and not giving in to alpo and gravy train, and or any other pizza or refridgerator items that he might have tasted. and I am not at all upset with gma & gpa, they were doing the best job they could with a 7 mo old newfie!! I think I have posted some stories before a past experiences babysitting so i give them lots of latitude!!!

Has anyone else experienced a hunger strike such as this????

He turned into a bit of pork chop while we were gone, so cutting back hasnt hurt him. I had already thought about, switching out his food every few months or so anyway. I have talked to my vet and he says unless he isnt drinking water or is excessively tired, he most likely is just being bratty?? Ideas ??? I truly believe this is the case.

PS: It has been eons since I have posted, here is a pic of our 8+ mo, 115 lb "emaciated" Larry. Rest assured I am not making light of this, one of my last posts was at 5 am in the morning because his stomach was growling.

If Larry became a 'prok chop' while you were away - he was eating good. Gma & Gpa while meaing well and trying to get him eat may have been giving table scraps - nothing will make a dog picky faster than that. A healthy dog will not let himself starve but will eat only when there is not other choice given.

The rule we use here is: The food bowl is put down. we then wait 20-25 minutes. If the dog is still actively eating I let him finish, is he has not eaten, the bowl gets picked up and put in the fidge (usually has canned meat & yogurt in food) and givien for the next meal. NO TREATS unless used in a training seesion. Next meal same thing. Usually after a few sessions like this the dog will eat as soon as the bowl is put down.

I've also read about a lot of Newfs slowing down on their eating this time of year because of the warmer weather. That might also be a factor. (Not that it affects my two piggies) Good luck with Larry.

WOW Kris, 115 pounds???? You're starving that poor boy! :D Abbey, as you know is 2 days older than her man Larry and weighs 105 pounds. We have always "free Fed" our two. BUT, after starting training classes last weekend, we were told that we need to "Take Back" the ALPHA roll and to start by putting them on a feeding schedule. Well, It took a few days before they started to eat each meal when it was given. And, we had to STOP giving treats for everything. This class is all about "verbal" positive reinforcement. Larry will be just fine, he's just exercising his Stubborn side, which by the way is what some call Landseers..........STUBBORN!
Abbey sends Larry Hugs and Licks, Zeke says, Hey!
P.S. Next vacation, Take Larry too.

My Newf Gabe pulled these same shenanigans at just about the same age. Right around 7-8 months he became especially picky. He's always been a finicky eater. My Golden, however, is a chow hound and will eat anything and everything in sight. When Gabe was a pup I was so worried about him not getting enough to eat (he'd also sniff and walk away from his kibble) that I would do anything to try to get him to eat. Ridiculous things...like trying different kibbles, adding stuff to make it more appealing to him, etc. Then he wouldn't eat any of it...Of course I rushed him to the vet thinking something was wrong and I was told the same thing- he was being a brat!!! So the vet told me to do the same thing that Joan suggested above. Leave the food down for no more than 20 minutes then pick it up. Sometimes he would eat it, sometimes he wouldn't. He quickly learned that what I put down was all that he was getting so his behavior changed quickly. He skipped a few meals, of course...on his hunger strike...but he didn't die from it like I thought would happen (LOL). He's still not overly enthusiastic about eating but I will tell you what really worked- we got another dog. Now it's a competition between the two and they both scarf their meals down like it's their last time eating! So- the moral to the story is.....
GET ANOTHER NEWF!!!
