JOSH!

We should be absolutely delighted with Josh's win!

I realize that fads can help with an uneducated public (e.g. the Dalmatian's rise a decade ago to the top 10 of AKC breeds and its subsequent huge decline). When at dog shows, I'm brutally honest about the positives and negatives whan the public comes by to chat in the grooming area. Drool, slobber, size, etc seem to turn off the non-serious ones quickly.

Obviously, with the increased publicity, breeders will need to take more care than ever with placements.

But, the positives far outweigh any perceived negatives in my opinion.

Bravo to Josh.

Here's kind of a sideways question about a big Newf win...

Does anyone think that this will help break the ice for other Newf wins? Will judges be more likely to give the Newfs a little better look now that the breed was recognized on the highest alter of showing?

I know Josh was not the first Newf to ever win a show, but every once in awhile it seems like it's good to give a major wake-up call to the sport, and remind all of the judges in America and Europe that it is o.k. to pick outside of the terrier and toy group.

i must say i for one am shocked at the responses here. i agree that we all should be proud of josh and to say bravo-i thought everyone here would be so excited for newfs everywhere. i understand the down side to any breed winning but can't we be happy and supportive of a major newf win like this one? i loved josh and how he responded to his handler and the crowd-i am not one to judge his correctness to the breed standard as i am not an expert nor did any of us have any hands on experience to judge him last night. i say go josh and thank you for the wonderful show you put on for all of us!

Thanks everyone, just trying to do my part.
I'll say it again, just cause someone falls in love with Josh and wants one, doesn't mean they won't be a great home. The key is education

And I for one, am very glad Josh won. He is gorgeous, and he absolutely floats. He deserved that win 100% in my book. I've seen other newfs at Westminster that didn't make the grade for a BIS win, but Josh did, and then some

There are definitely two sides to every coin and I am still estatic over Josh's victory. My husband had a good point that since he is a big boy and full grown, most people will look at that and say maybe not for me....not so easily said for a toy or medium size dog. Regis Philbin quipped that he looked more like a big bear than a dog. If he had been a puppy and won the equivilent national attention, then i'd really worry. I think Elizabeth hit the nail on the head, education is the key, for any breed. Apparantly sales of Ibizan hounds went up 80% after the win for that breed. I also appreciate the comment someone made that maybe more attention will be paid to newf rescue and or research with Josh being so rightly celebrated. And the best part is, in my opinion it was his personality that won him the title, his big loving heart shone through and was the icing on his physical self. What a true spokesnewf!!!

i was fortunate enough to be at westminster this year for the show. i was thrilled that josh, the newf, won. he was absolutely magnificent! ! ! It gave me great pride to be associated with the breed. the show was filled with beautiful dogs, each showing their heart out (esp. the working group). i am glad i was not the judge. the photos and tv coverage did not come close to portraying their true essence. i understand the down side of a dog winning such an event, but i am hoping this will only educate the masses as to what a wonderful dog this breed is and its size will keep the "trendy" people from becoming owners. If i am wrong, and alot of newfies get purchased by temporary owners, we as true lovers of the breed will just have to open our homes and hearts to those who need rescueing. what is one more newfie . . .? i always say the more the merrier! lucky's mom
