Way to go JOSH! We're pulling for you, buddy!

Sophie got so tired out watching Westminster last night...LOL. She was glued to the TV. She just LOVES other dogs. It was a riot watching her play bow in front of the TV! Maybe we need a puppy?? LOL

As beautiful as Josh looks on TV, seeing him in person is Awesome. We had first seen Josh at a show in 2001 when we were discussing getting a Newf puppy from our breeder. I knew then that Josh was Special and that he would move on to become the BEST NEWF in the Country. We also had the honor this past October of being in the same ring with Josh with our Pepe as Winners dog. Pepe is now a Champion. I feel so fortunate that I was able to see Josh before he retires. He is truly magnificant and I am happy that he made it to Top 7 at Westminster. He does the Newf breed proud. GO ALL THE WAY JOSH!

All Newf folks should be cheering tonight. Josh is a great ambassador of the breed with his personality shining through!

Congrats to Josh! The one thing that impressed me most about the entire show this year was how diligent both David Frei and the other guy (sorry, can't remember his name) were about stressing the importance about learning about everything you can about a breed before selecting one.

Hopefully, people will listen. And, now our secret is out, and everyone has seen how special our Newfies are.

SAR, I thought that the Akita was stunning too.

Annie that is the FIRST akita that i ever saw gaiting that gave me goosebumps, he was that impressive in his gait, his structure, his head type, he had it all.
i wonder if other breeds are as bad as ours, picking type over structure.
sorry jim, but my opinion is just one in many, and as you all know i am not one to run with the crowd.

Many people wouldnt know correct gait if it jumped at them,
and many if they saw it would say, yuck becouse they are used to seeing severe toeing in and weak rears, thinking that is the correct gait.

While watching the show, I was torn. Being totally addicted and obsessed with Newfies, I couldn't help but want to see a Newf win. Josh has a wonderful personality, and wow's all crowds... my heart is happy when I watch him.

However, from a rescue standpoint, my heart isn't so happy. Millions of people watched the show... heck, even the guys on the Bob & Tom show were rooting for Josh.

People are going to want a newf now, because the think it's the best dog... cause he won that "big show in New York". It's just like people who buy team jersey's after the team has won the world series or superbowl, or final four... they are into status, and want "the best".

One person on Newf L had a great idea. They are going to print out a bunch of puppy brochures from the NCA Website and take them to their local Petsmart, along with their Newf, and walk around... and hopefully educate people.

Maybe that's something we can do here. Print out brochures, head out to local pet stores, and help to educate people on what Newfies are all about.

That would be our own Lizzie doing that! kudos to her!
oh and after the group one win, i had that night from local people, 3 emails wanting a newf for their kids.
it has started already, and another 3 came in last night.
yup it is gonna be hard on everyone involved in the breed.
this is what the millers want, and i did get an email from an obvious miller, just the way it was worded is a dead give away and forwarded to a friend out west he also said, it is a miller, yup, they are gonna be cashing in, and wont tell buyers the true personality of a young newf, that they are working dogs, that need guidance, that they dont come as pups with the personality of an adult that is matured and well behaved, much work goes into that matured adult, but people dont want to see that or hear that.

Well ... I think the concerns for the breed are well-founded, however, there are positives to more exposure for a breed, IMO. More people knowing about the dog means people may be less likely to hide their children "from that nasty chow" or whatever they say (I've read several stories like this on NN and other places). More people knowing about the breed and being involved could mean more money is spent on research problems prevalent in Newfies. I'm not saying that the positives necessarily outweigh the negatives, but I think they should be kept in mind. There's certainly nothing we're going to do to change whatever happens next because of Josh's win (it might be very short-lived anyway), but I think you are right to have us focus on education. Obviously the breeders are the key people for this and all we can do is hope that breeders continue to be choosy in selling pups. But rather than try to talk people out of the breed or turn them off with an unhelpful attitude (I personally have experienced this and have read posts from others expressing their frustration) I think we should do our best to help them figure out whether Newfs are the breed for them and if they are how they can choose a quality breeder.

All in all ... I'm still thrilled that Josh won.

(Runs and hides under her desk for cover)

Sailorgirl, you're right. I think it's important to look at the positives too. And I don't want to be "negative", it's just that from a rescue standpoint, any dog winning isn't a "good thing". So, if we can take steps like Elizabeth is, and get out there and hopefully educate some people, maybe we'll make a small impact. You know, "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure"....

I always "cringe" when a dog wins something big, like that. I pray they don't start makin' movies about 'em! Even if they were to show the puppyhood part, I feel that most people would think:"OH! Isn't that FUNNY, isn't that CUTE!" And, the viscious circle begins, again.
