Is Nala Going Into Heat?

On Friday I noticed that Nala has started licking her hind quarters much more than she ever has in the past. I have also started to notice a strong fishy smell on her breath and hind quarters. My girlfriend has assured me that the smell is what a period smells like. Could Nala be going into heat already? She will be 6 months old on Wednesday.

I did some research on the signs of a dog in heat, and haven't really noticed any of them. I have not seen any discharge or swolen vulva, and she has not begun urinating more frequently. I have noticed that her behaviour has changed a little bit. She seems to be acting kind of cranky, and doesn't listen to commands nearly as well as she has been.

Is there something I should be doing incase she is going into heat? Such as laying a towel down in her crate or putting boxers on her? Or should I just wait until I eventually find the red discharge before taking all the necessary steps for dealing with the heat cycle?

When our 8 month old Ziva went into her first heat it was the licking that started first. The swelling came the next day or so. We didn't notice an odor or smell and the amount of blood was very small drops at first. If you don't see any swelling or blood drops on your floor then I would take her to the vet as the smell could indicate she has something else going on.

I agree with the above...The strong smell associated with the licking could indicate she has an infection of some kind. Could be a yeast infection starting, or something else.
If you don't see any signs of heat within the next day or so, take her in and get her checked. Better safe than sorry.
I would think she is too young to develop a pyo, but I'm not sure about that.

Also just check to make sure she is clean back there and not developing a hot spot...

You could also wipe her bottom with a tissue to check for red. Suki only left a few drops around and didn't need boxers and a pad. But in the absence of being in heat, a call to the vet cannot hurt.
