Oh my gosh girl, you are in for a treat. There are tons and tons of articles and information and just plain old stuff out there. People who follow a holistic lifestyle don't always agree so there are many different viewpoints.

My best advice is to find a good holistic vet or an herbalist (yes, they treat animals too) and make a consultation appointment. You can ask questions and figure out if it's something you're willing to devote your energy to. If you want something more specific, let me know. I have my favorites...

Yep!
How wonderful you want to learn more! I am excited for you! This is such a fun subject! Not like I am bias or anything!

Herbs for Pets. Mary Wulff-Tilford & Gregory Tilford. Very Good. I have a copy and I depend on it.

Encyclopedia of Natural Pet Care. CJ Puotinen.

Holistic Aromatherapy for Animals: Kristen Leigh Bell

Essential Oil Safety Guide. Robert Tisserand and Tony Balacs.

Botanical Safety Handbook, by McGuffin, Hobbs, Upton and Goldberg.
(I've heard Hobbs speak he's brilliant! If you need to know about mushroom or fungi he's your man!)

Herb Contraindication and Drug interactions: Francis Brinker, N.D. (Another smarty pants)

Or

Herbal Medicines: A Guide for healthcare professionals. Joanne Barnes, Linda Anderson and J. David Phillipson.

I pull information about herbs from all three of the above to ensure I am using something safe for what I am doing.

Understanding Medicinal Plants: Their Chemistry and Therapeutic Action. Bryan A. Hanson, PhD

It is also important to understand how herbs work.

Read some of the articles here,
http://www.petsage.com/

It has grown and changed hands, but Petsage is still of incredibly high quality! She gives some excellent book resources, several links for holistic vet resources such as:
http://www.ahvma.org/

So plenty of information on this site.

Also get a book about Tellington Touch. Message is real important in holistic work too and it is very easy to learn. This is something you can definately do yourself.

This should get you on the right path! I have the books as I am in this profession. You must also remember, every author, every herbalist, every holistic vet will differ. So check things out! If you feel uncomfortable or if you are uncertain, do the research. Check with holistic vets first. And...
actually animal herbalists are not vet just as we are not doctors. We do NOT diagnose. So keep that in mind. NEVER try to diagnose. Leave that to the vets and doctors! Then work with it!

This should get your curiousity going, will feed your want to learn, help you find a holistic vet in your area, and...
If you hunger for more, I know of a few good schools! Contact me via pm!

Oh shoot missed a question there!

No. You do not have to feed a raw diet. I do not feed a raw diet and I am completely comfortable with that. I do give them some raw, but not all.

I use different alternative methods on all of us!

You do not have to do anything you feel uncomfortable with or cannot afford. The beauty of holistic is the big word, alternative!

Diets are numerous. Like the Raw diet for humans. Some herbalists say it is too cold of a diet, some say we should all live by it, some say we should incooporate some of it to provide variety.

It is the same with canines! It is more important to enhance your knowlege understanding "holistic". This empowers us to understand and take part in our Newfies well-being. A far more important journey than freting over diets you feel uncomfortable with.
