Hi. Never done this before--don't know whether I'm doing it right...
Here's a little about me... Years ago after having to put down my Belgian Tervuren, my husband and I were so lonely for another dog. We did research into large breeds--and the Newfoundland kept making the top of the list. I told my husband the biggest drawbacks seemed to be hair and slobber. We got two females, littermates. They were just wonderful dogs.....When they were 8 yrs. old we added a 3-year old St. Bernard from the local shelter. One girl left this world at 11 years, and her sister followed 3 months later.....We currently own 2 short-haired female St. Bernards and 1 very large (185-lb) male St. Bernard mix--or perhaps he's a Pyrenean Mastiff (not to be confused with a Great Pyrenees). All are rescued dogs.....I love them all but I really want a Newf again. When our number of dogs goes down from 3 to 2, then we will get a Newf puppy from a breeder. I figure I have anywhere from 1 to 5 years before that time comes. I intend to spend that time researching breeders, visiting kennels, and getting info.

I really like the irish spotted and bronze. (Of my first two, one was completely black and the other had a white chest and white on tip of one foot .) Temperament and mellowness is MOST important, but I figured since I have all this time, maybe I could get the coloring I like too!
Does anyone have any recommendations for breeders, or warning flags for who to stay away from?

Rules on Newf.Net do not allow endorsement of a breeder or negative comments of a breeder. Good or bad references are not allowed on this board. However we do have advice in what to look for in a breeder, questions to ask etc.. the advice is in the form of a "sticky" in General Discussion.

Also a great place to start researching a breeder is the Newfoundland Club of America website and also the local clubs either website or events. I don't know where you live, but if you check the Newf Club of America site you'll find a breeders list for all the states, which is a good start, and also a list of all the recognized breed clubs. Hopefully there is one in your area! Welcome to newf.net, you will learn a lot here! I know I have!

(Oops! Understood. I should have known that!) Here's a safe question:
The 2 newfs I had were very long haired. Is this what is meant by "yak hair"? I don't remember seeing Newfs with hair that long at the shows.

Were the two Newfs you had spayed/neutered? That often causes the "Yak" coat. Long, thick wooley.

Also, the dogs at the shows have been "show groomed"...trimmed, thinned, clipped, etc. No Newf that I've ever seen (or any other long haired dog, for that matter) at a dog show looks like those allowed to go "au natural"!!

If I let the hair on their ears grow, we could braid it!!

Both were spayed. If I remember right the breeder said her lines tended to be longer-haired. Both my girls Belle and Ariel would check on me during the night, and without opening my eyes I could always tell which one was checking on me by stroking down the length of the ear--the hair on Belle's ears was extremely long. So was the hair right on top of her head-- we could force it upright and it looked like punk rock hair!

Do you mean to say that for shows the coat is clipped all over? (The back and sides?)

Yep - And the top and the bottom...and the legs, feet, ears, etc etc. Some more than others.

To luvXL K9:
I wanted to say that the pictures of your dogs always make me smile! Whimsy! And just the idea of having fun in life really comes across... the friendly "anyone could be safe with me" open-family dog character that you read about in the dog books.
Was it difficult to get them to keep sunglasses and hats on? Or was that never an issue?
