Newfyork,
Gulliver is doing so much better. He put on 10 pounds in the first three weeks he was here with me. I have been talking with a couple of people concerning Gullivers BEST intrest for a great life and a loving forever HOME. I would love to keep him with me forever but, I don't see it with the house I live in now, and now the question of moving from Ohio to Texas to care for my father has come up. Gulliver started cutting his teeth last friday so the vet feels he is about four months. He weighed 35 pounds on the vets scales. There are so many caring, loving people on this site, I Thank GOD I found it. I was tring yesterday to post a picture of him on the photo page but I am not computer smart enough to do it,any knowledge about how to put it on out of my documents file?
Thanks, Mel

If you do a search on the topic...."Really Dumb Question".. scroll down a bit, it will give you exact directions on hoe to post pictures. Once you read it, you will see how easy it is to do.. my the way, it was me, who asked the really dumb question, because I could not figure it out either.. good luck

You couldn't have picked a better state to rescue gulliver in! By what I've read on here, the rescue program is great there. And know matter how long you get to keep gulliver, you are to be commended for being a fantastic foster father!
I hope you have been in touch with the rescue people out there who can help you find gulliver his forever home. Please keep us posted and thanks for being the caring responsable guy that you must be!!!

PS. I bet someday when your life settles down, you'll find room for a newfy of your own! Once you have had a newfy, you can't go with out one! ;)

Brenda and Maggie,
Thanks very much. I love Gulliver very much and he is the sweetest pup I have ever known. But, just a note I am his foster mom. Yes, I am a construction labor foreman but, I am a woman working in a mans world. If we met on the street you would probably not believe that I do the work I do, mostly it is mind over matter. I raised three sons alone so that gave me some knowledge on how to COPE with working around and with alot of guys. My two sisters are both married and raising their families now so it leaves me to be the one who should change jobs, and homes to care for my father. Gulliver would not be happy in the heat of Texas. He is the first dog that has ever made me sneeze allday and my eyes iche like crazy. But he does stay here until I find the right home that will love him. Thanks again for your support. All the people here on newf.net are just great people and wonderful animal lovers.
I am going to try to e-mail Jeannie the photo of Gulliver so she can post it for all to see him.
Thanks again
Mel

Mel,
That is too funny, I thought, boy what a sweet young man! ;) . I too am in a rather manly profession. I do all the electrical work on giant industrial dryers! Well, nice to meet you Mel and hope to hear good news about gulliver real soon!

Mel, as usual I am late to the thread. I just want to say welcome and congratulations to Gulliver on having found you. We have 2 newf boys, one is 16 months and the other is 7 months. These are our first newfs. But this is the perfect place to ask, there are no stupid questions. Again welcome, sorry so late.

I know many people that have newfs in Texas. They adjust and they tend to loose their warm undercoat.

That's true, what Jeannie says, Mel. There are Texans who have Newfs too. Last year one of the Newf judges at the Working Dog show in Springfield was from Tx (and she was a Newf breeder as well as an original Newfie herself). Can't recall her name.
By the way, sorry about thinking you were a "guy". You go, girl!

HI Mel
I think what you did is absolutely wonderful

I just wanted to let you know that your right about finding a special home for Gulliver :D
I myself have rescued 3 newfs in the last 8 months. They all came to me as adults. Please stay focused on the "best family" part...the newfs will
adjust to climate. I live in Orlando FL. My first newf came from the very north west tip of Tenn. , my second newf is from Fl , and my third (as most know here) I just got back from Alaska with him. He could not live with his family there any longer due to the weather...he is one yr old and at 10 months was diagnosed with total hip displaysia. His name is Eja and he has adjusted to the FL weather absolutely fine :D
I am actually getting to see a newf blow coat for the first time....Eja is losing his undercoat that they keep for the winter weather. I do have a pool..so that is great to look for if he is going south..or actually anywhere...they love to swim. I hope you are able to find a very special home for Gulliver
he sounds like a very special boy

Mel,

For what it is worth, I think you were meant to keep Gulliver. As you've heard, climate is not a problem. He will adjust and only needs love. I think he will be a big help to you in your transition to a new place as well. That said - I have the utmost respect for you for rescuing him and being a big enough person to understand that you may not be able to keep him, as well as your dedication to finding him a good home.

As for your allergies - have you ever tried Allegra D? Or Claritin? I'm a certified animal lover with terrible terrible animal allergies. My allergist told me to get rid of them all. I have prescription Allegra D, three giant breed dogs, and two cats. No problems.

So now I have taken away your two biggest obstacles to keeping Gulliver:)

It's really just a feeling that I think you and he were meant for each other, but please do what you think is best. You will be respected and supported in this forum for whatever happens.

I DO So Want to THANK YOU ALL for being so sweet and supportive.Newfnet is a great site with great people who really love animals and each other, and GOD has blessed me by allowing me to find this site.
Moving back to Texas after 26 years, it is kind of scarey...but life calls...I am afraid I will not have the time Gulliver would need much less deserve. My father is almost completely blind and has parkensons, so he is going to need my time( his wifeof 25 years, just up and left him) Guess she decided she didn't want to have to care for anyone any more. It was a complete shock to everyone. He can't be alone and it has been a long time since I have lived with my father, we will have alot to work out between the two of us.
Bringing a dog into his home I believe would be hard on him, which in turn would be hard on Gulliver. Oh, way too much thinking here.....
Thank you all again, I can't say enough about how good this site is for those who love their newfs

First of all, I want to agree with everyone who's already expressed that we'll respect whatever decision you make. You've already done a wonderfully amazing thing by rescuing him in the first place and this forum is the first to admit that a newf isn't the right dog for everyone. Through no fault of your own, you obviously didn't get to do much research on the breed before opening your home to Gulliver.

I want to add, though, that he might fit in at your father's house better than you think. Even when my Morgan was a gangly, excited, and clumsy pup, her favorite place to visit when I took her to the elementary school where my mom teaches was the special ed. room with the physically challenged kids. She seemed to know instinctively that it was time to be extra careful. She led me around the room and made sure to stop and visit with each child individually so everyone got a chance to hug and pet her as well as they were able.
I haven't started therapy dog training yet, but there are a lot of people on this forum who bring their dogs to nursing homes, hospitals, schools, etc. to visit. Newfs seem to be extra well-suited for providing love where it's needed the most. If I remember correctly, one of SAR's pups is an assistance dog for someone in a wheelchair.

Again - everyone here will respect the decision you make. The fact that you're so dedicated to finding a forever home that will best fit Gulliver says a lot about your character. But, I too, believe that you were put in this position for a reason.

I also agree that Gulliver may fit into you new family situation nicely also. My mother in law has Parkinsons also and there is a lot of "down" time with resting and naps and Gulliver could make life more interesting for him and give you another focus and companion during these times. I truly believe that there is no such thing as a coincidence and Gulliver sure did cross your path at the right time.
There are a lot of products out now for people that are allergic to their pets. The pet supply houses have some of them. Maybe one would work for you.
