Ideal weight??

Just curious how slow/quickly everyone elses newfies grew...my 10 month old is about 80 lbs. (I can get an exact figure Monday when she goes to the vet) and to me that seems too small. In reading posts Ive read 9 month olds were 115 lbs. already. I limit Sadies walking and shes always been a stubborn eater...she will only eat her dry food if i mix yummy treats in with it and never finishes it all. She eats maybe 5 cups/day. But usually less. She has had UTIs almost every month, which now it may be a problem with her anatomy (ectopic ureters). Idk if that would be the reason for her not eating much. I doubt it since she never turns down a treat! The vet says she is in excellent shape, and one of my pet peeves is an overweight dog. But could this be a thyroid issue that has gone unnoticed??

As a general rule newfs should weigh 10 lbs for every month of age. So generally a 10 month old should weigh 100 lbs. Some of mine have been over that some under. The only real way to tell if she is too heavy is to put your hands on her - under the hair. You should be able to feel the ribs without having to press to hard but not the spine or hip bones.

Much better that she grows slowly than too fast. I wouldn't worry too much about her weight at this point. It takes at least 3 years before a Newf is finally grown. And assuming she is in good health otherwise and eating quality food, she will grow as large as she is genetically programmed to grow. Newfs vary a lot in weight.

The adult weight range for females is around 100 to 130 lbs give or take, so she is not far off and she is still very young. Be patient. How big were her parents?

I don't know what you're feeding, but she should be on a premium adult food. It sounds like she is eating about the right amount.

My female pup is 9 months and she weighs 92lbs. She is on the shorter side at 25 inches tall. She takes right after her mother who was 115lbs and only 26 inches tall. Your breeder would be the best person to ask about weight and size, especially if they know a lot about their bloodlines. It sounds like your Newf is on the right track tho.

I can palpate and feel her spine and hip bones, but sje just grew a few inches taller, seeminly overnight. Shes always gotten chubby and packed on weight and then gotten taller and thins out for awhile. She is on a good adult food, though. Ill get an exact weight tomorrow at the vet and post back if I still have concerns.
