Human Foods

Hey I was just wondering what types of "human" foods you guys allow your dogs to eat. So far we have been pretty limited because we're not big on giving your dogs table food. They have had yogurt, peanut butter, green beans now that Willow is on a diet, sardines which I don't count haha and carrots.

Elvis has had veggies like carrots (raw baby carrots are his evening treat), green beans, peas, and every once in awhile a tiny bit of leftover mashed potatoes. He loves apples and bananas, and will sometimes get a few frozen berries when I make a smoothie. He also gets peanut butter (frozen in a kong) and a piece of cheese here and there. His allergies prohibit him from anything else.

We give Ziva cooked chicken thighs, apples, blueberries, fresh carrots and celery, whole grain bread, and the canned fish we give her is human quality. We also give her string cheese and turkey franks during training.

Snuffles gets some diced boiled chicken breast or part of a cod filet with his night kibble. Also sometimes used boiled hamburger. He gets fruit almost every day, some type of melon, strawberries, blueberries and banana. We keep a Kong Toy in the freezer with peanut butter frzen in the big hole. He gets that when we leave him alone. I also use a half piece of a Kraft Single American Cheese to help gets his supplements down before dinner.

Suki gets almost any of our fruits and veggies. I'm pretty sure Grapes/raisins, onions, and garlic are bad for them; so I don't' offer those. Lettuce she will nibble on, but I always find it some place later. She doesn't like mushrooms or celery. She does like red, green, yellow, and orange peppers, apples, bananas, cucumber, strawberries (when I feed strawberries to the kids, I cut the tops off and Suki gets the top including the leaves). She adores peanut butter (and will come running from the other side of the house when I open the jar).

I'm always nervous that giving her a lot of leftover meat will make her sick. So she has had beef and steak only very rarely. She has had a left over hamburger from the trash ... which turned out very badly as she also ate the foil wrapper it was in. And that made her sick. Also, Easter chocolates eaten with the foil on made her sick. I don't even know how she got them, but I know she did because the colorful foil came back out. So we won't be buying any of those this year!

Misha likes salad, goes bonkers for popcorn, occasionally gets a chip or two (loves corn chips) loves lobster and crab, hamburger and steak. She isn't eating this stuff everyday though, except salad maybe. :) Things she takes to her bed or living room and smashes with her feet- black olives, cherry tomatoes, celery... :D

We both agreed after so many issues with the dog food and all the recalls that we would supplement more people food. We bought a freezer and started cooking for them to lessen the actual amount of dog food given. (I would go raw in a second but Vin is not convinced and neither is Myra) Currently, we cook 3 meatloafs (we add many things to them including some veggies) a week and add a few slices to kibble. They will have some cornbeef tonight and I also bought some cod the other night. My two also get suitable leftovers added in.

Mila's been given salmon, steak, sweet potatoes, chicken, etc.

Mila's stolen pretty much everything else, including non-food items like toys, underwear and hats.

She has a stomach made of solid steel.

Cooper has had everything he can steal. Zuzu has had a large quantity of Trident (NOT recommended).

Really though they tend to get some kid food as topper on their meals sometimes. My daughter has been on a soup kick lately so I'll often hide their supplements (and Zuzus abx) under a scoop of soup or plain pasta on top of their food.

Sweet Potatoes, meat, definitely. Zuzu loves carrots and they both love watermelon.

I buy salt free canned veggies for the girls food and Moonlight gets a boiled hamburger/rice concoction that I fix to get her to eat her k/d food. Otherwise, they do get a lot of human food. We are more careful about what we don't give them - no skin or fat, nothing salty, no cooked bones, no grease, no onions, raisins or grapes. Only a taste of the sweets. Oh there's nothing like watching a Newf eat peas. It's hilarious, but they love them.

Ah I forgot that we gave ours watermelon once. It was outside on our deck and it was gone in no time! Really it wasn't that messy but maybe we had a less juicy watermelon on our hands.

We gave Elvis watermelon on July 4th this year. We froze half and gave that to him first, but it was too much work and he gave up on it. We then gave him the other half, but he would only eat it if I broke off chunks and hand-fed him. I ended up stickier than he did! We filmed it, but watching me hand feed a dog isn't that entertaining so we never posted it.

My dogs get the typical fare...frozen beans, peas, carrots, some yogurt, watermelon, peanut butter. They also get the last bite usually of whatever I am eating...I can't resist those eyes and they make me feel guilty for not sharing! LOL...of course it has to be something that won't hurt them...of yes, I forgot the fruit, bananas, apples.

Maggie gets whatever veggies I'm cooking with our dinner, and fruit whenever we eat that. Typically apples, blueberries, strawberries, tomatoes, broccoli, green beans, carrots, etc.

In the summer, she eats anything and everything she can steal from the garden.

If the meat I cook for dinner doesn't have sauce, etc on it she gets some leftovers of that in lieu of some kibble. I've now started giving her raw chicken/turkey necks when I have them.

On Friday's she gets a bite of pizza crust. (Friday is pizza night an Rob can't resist those eyes...). Once a month on Thursday's she gets a Five Guy's Hamburger for dinner - because her daddy loves her.

She only gets table food in her bowl or as a treat while training.

I used to give my pony half a watermelon, and she ate it very neatly, and then slurped the juice ( water?) out of it. Her lips would be pink afterwards!

Maggie gets any leftover veggies, her favorite being peas. I *love* giving them to her one at a time, because she chews them. I've never had a dog that chewed, they just gulped. Her favorite is dried blueberries, she doesn't like fresh. She gets any leftover meat without seasoning, veggies, whole wheat pasta, and lately a few jellybeans because it's funny to watch her chew them. Her favorite treat is popcorn.

And I'm not going to lie, she gets pizza crust, chip and pretty much anything my daughter is eating.

My 11 year old Newf only gets people food. I cut out all kibble for fear of bloat. His sire died of bloat at 11 and his maternal grand sire died of bloat at nine years and I'm not prepared to chance it. Gander Bear gets whole grain bread, raw cage free organic eggs and smoked herring along with sockeye oil and has never looked better.

Tiika hasn't had any "dog" food since she left the breeder at 12 weeks - only people food for her - she gets a puree of every fresh fruit and vegetable which is okay for dogs with every meal, and then she's on a 7 day rotation of salmon, turkey, tuna, pork, mackerel, beef, sardines. Even her treats, I make for her - usually fresh pork liver which I cook, and tiny cubes of cheddar cheese, both of which I cut into little bits for obedience classes and trials. I don't trust dog foods!
